What is over all better the k6-2 550 or a k6-2+ at 450.Its on an Asus P5A-B (at motherboard)with a k6-2 300 currently. I told him to upgrade the motherboard and case but that will be out of his budget.I do plan to overclock the CPU to as close to 600 as i can get. I can get both for around $35.

i think you should buy the K6-2 550 & oc it to 600.

because you can't unfortunately oc a 450 up to 500/550.

if you know you don't know, the way could be more easy.

Try and get a k62+ or a k63+ these processors have L1 and L2 cache on it. They will perform better than a k6 2 because k6 2 doesnt have any L2 cache and depends on the motherboard for L2 cache. If u intend to play games on this pc the best videocard you can get is a Geforce 2 pro.

I have heard various sites state that the K6-2 550 actually performs worse than the K6-2 500. I could be a flaw? Anyway, I'd go for the K6-2 500 or 550, your choice, set it to some unreasonably high voltage like 2.8v, and put on a decent Socket 462 (Athlon/Duron) cooler to keep it running. These coolers do fit.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

way wrong.
Most regular K6 2s can't do 600, the 450 is a K6 2+, .18 micron instead of .25. 600mhz isn't a big deal. the 450 is more like an underclocked processor than anything else.

PS: my .25 K6 2 450 runs stable at 570, 550 isn't unatainable, 600 is really pushing it tho, 65*C.

you completely missed the point.
you said

In this case, you are wrong.
the K6 2 550 is pretty much at its limit.
the K6 2 +(note the PLUS) 450 will hit 600mhz 85-90% of the time.
I'll say again.
the K6 2 @ 550Mhz that he speaks of is .25 micron processor, the K6 2+ @ 450 is a .18 micron processor. the 550 is not likely to do 600mhz without massive voltage and cooling, the K6 2+ 450 almost always goes to at least 600.

the guy asked which is better, a K6 2 or K6 2+.
the K6 2+ is, the cost isn't that much different that I've found.
what is your deal man?

If you can get hold of a k6-3, then go for one, they dont overclock well, (max I could get from my 450 is 500) but they WAY outperform any of the k6-2's

There is no reason to OC a 550 to 600, the difference would be unnoticable.Nor a 450 to 500 for that matter.

maybe not a large increase, but back when a 500 Mhz p3 cost double a k6-3 450, and a 500 was like the fastest available, then overclocking to 500 was a good overclock, specially on this cpu, obviously you wernt around in those days.
