I have a 1000$ budget to build myself the best computer I can. I want to use it for a video project in which i will be doing a lot of video editing. I also want to be able to plug in my piano and guitars.

I really need help in building it, I am lost because i have been out of the computer world for some time.

To start off with, you should get a Quad core CPU...I think you must have figured that out...
The i7 would be a perfect choice for the Video editing stuff but I think with a sound card that would fulfil your needs, would go over the budget with an i7...
So the best alternative would be the Phenom II X4 940...
If you are not brand specific, we could come up with a good build...

Something C2Q is good because you need to edit videos, but if you want to plug in instruments you'd need a good sound card. Maybe like a Xonar?

While the above configuration is more competent than my offering, this is what I would modify that build for your budget and needs. While a Core i7 is faster than a Core 2 Quad, in video editing the difference in speed is almost negligible for smaller projects. It is up to you to decide if you think it is necessary.

Here is my offering:

Case, DVD drive, and HDD are the same as the above

Summary: Core 2 Quad Q9550, GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3L (P45), Corsair 550VX, 9600GSO, Asus Xonar DX, 8GB (4x2GB) A-Data

Total: $1004
MIR: -60
New Total $944

The CPU is 17% slower than the Core i7 in video editing in premiere according to Toms. However, you are getting more (yet a bit slower) ram; You get a better PSU, the 9600GSO supports the CUDA plugins with some video editing programs, and the Xonar and the soundboard allow for the recording of multiple instruments.
