Hey I was wondering what I should get... My router is located downstairs and I don't have wifi upstairs. But I have ethernet at every room upstairs. I'm trying to get a strong signal of wifi upstairs, should I get an acces point or what is the best and cheapest way to get wifi upstairs? I don't realy want to place repeaters at some rooms because that can get expensive quickly. I was wondering if there was a device that will output wifi signal when i put my ethernet cable in.

Agreed that either getting a dedicated AP or reconfiguring a router to be an Access point is your best route.

How many square feet is your second story and where is your router on the bottom floor (center location, far top left corner, center right, etc, etc)?
This will determine where is best to put the access point and if you want an omnidirectional (360 degree) antenna or a directional.

If you want to get a dedicated AP the Ubiquiti products are very good for this. You can get a wall/ceiling mounted one if you dont need to use any additional ethernet ports.
Yes, that is called Powerline..sort of liek ethernet over power. Actually it is that. It uses the electrcitiy in your wall outlets and carries data like that. It's not as fast as a direct connect to the router, but it can be faster than wireless. What type of router do you have? If you have AC, you can try to use a wireless adapter, but it may not be as stabled as you want it to be.

The OP said he had ehternet in every room. There is no need for powerline networking.

Ah I didn't see that part. Thanks for the point out.

The Google WiFi setup works really well as a simple mesh network. You can (and should) plug them into the ethernet ports around the house and let it do the WiFi hand off for in house roaming.

There are others out there as well... I've setup the Google and the customer is very happy
