Depends entirely on the mobo chipset. Many pre-built (HP, Sony, Dell, Lenovo etc) had a tendency to use the 915 chipset, meaning it didn't support a quad core at all, not even the q6600/q6700. It also wouldn't support any c2d, being stuck with PentiumD, P4 etc.
