So I got my hands on an older workstation and got lucky on the processor (w3565 or an i7 960 with ecc support) and I want it turned into a media/gaming pc. Though I need 4GB of vram for a 2 display setup, I don't care about frame rates as long as it doesn't fall below 20fps at 1080p medium, I don't use any type of AA, some light effects or motion blur (MB makes me sick), and I might be using this for 2 years or more before an upgrade. So I have compiled a list of GPU's on Ebay that meet this requirement and are constant in price.
gtx 770
r9 380
gtx 960
These GPU's don't meet the requirement but still good if I save money or deal with 3GB of vram
r9 290
r9 280x
gtx 780
r9 380x
All I am asking is for some thoughts.
Also don't worry about the psu. I will be using one of these 2 and I know they are enough.

The i7 960 is still a very good cpu and can cope with even a gtx 970. The GTX 770 are still very capable cards so if you see one with 4gb cheap dont worry. Though a gtx 960 will usually perform on par or slightly better than a GTX 770.

Out of the 3 as your top pick the gtx 380 is the better of the bunch and honestly you can even grab a 380x for $200 after rebate new.

Also a gtx 970 can now be found for around $200-200 on ebay right now.

In order of power - strongest card to weakest.

Gtx 780/r9 290
R9 380x/r9 280x
R9 380
Gtx 760/gtx 960

Where ive put 2 cards together it's because performance dldifference is IMO negligible.

& 3gb is enough , I would just steer clear of 2gb cards nowadays.

I guess you are right about 3 gb vram, maybe having more performance might be better in my case. it's just the problem is most AMD cards on Ebay seem to be above 80% of the sale values while Nvidia's are always below that. But I can wait maybe, if AMD releases some Polaris cards soon maybe the prices will drop more, or they could release a card that is right up my alley. (390 performance for less than 250$)
Also, nothing against Nvidia. I have never used their cards so I'm not familiar with software differences and I don't play any Nvidia optimized games.
