I've never had that happen, except for one faulty USB port in a laptop, long ago.Often they disappear.
My system (specs below) has 7 physical drives. All SSD.There are lots of motherboards now days that have multiple SATA connections for multiple hard drives. My first question is ... Is it even smart to consider adding on multiple hard drives (4-6) on a single motherboard with an operating system?
Can you recommend a motherboard? I may need 6 or more SATA connections. I am not a gamer. I'm more interested in trouble free reliability.I don't see why it would be a bad idea. If you need more storage space, slapping in another drive is always a convenient solution.
Reliability, in what aspect? Can you recommend a motherboard? I may need 6 or more SATA connections. I am not a gamer. I'm more interested in trouble free reliability.
Right now what I have trouble with is keeping the drives recognized by the system. Some are connected directly to the motherboard, some via a USB 3.0. Often they disappear. I have to re-boot or unplug the USB and plug it back in. I know I am stressing the motherboard. It is an old Dell 9070 and it is time for a major upgrade. But I want to take some time and figure out the best way to go.Reliability, in what aspect?

Yes, I would say often, several times a day in some cases. My guess is the motherboard is over taxed. I kinda feel it is not the connections because simply pulling out the USB and changing ports is the temporary solution, or if it is a SATA connection, re-booting.I've never had that happen, except for one faulty USB port in a laptop, long ago.
I've had multiple drives in systems for many years.
Either your motherboard or the cable connections, or the USB ports would seem to be at fault.
I would say just don't buy the absolute cheapest motherboard you can find. Get something lower mid-range or mid-range and you should be fine. Can you recommend a motherboard? I may need 6 or more SATA connections. I am not a gamer. I'm more interested in trouble free reliability.

Can you share with me the setup you have, namely the motherboard, age, and how many hard drives you have attached to it?
Thanks
