As said , to carry over ddr3 ram you'd need to go has well which is still an old platform.

Go ryzen , 1500x or 1600 (1600 would be the real recommendation)

That's my advice .

Your current board ,CPU,ram - sell it as a package - someone will buy it.

Hell even...
Do you need integrated graphics (an apu) or do you have a discrete GPU installed??

Straight CPU wise , 860k/870k/880k - all pretty much the same with varying clock speeds (the 860k can be overclocked to the same level anyway)

Apu's (with graphics onboard ) -any of the a8 or a10 7***k chips , once again can all be overclocked to the same level.

A 860K is a sweet spot right now for about $50, I paid $40 a few weeks ago for a new one. On a stock cooler you can easily bump it to 4GHZ "880K Stock $80+" without dealing with overheating. Anything more than a 860K and you will need to flash your bios for support.

hi delaro so would the 860k perform better than the a86600k i have at the minute btw i really dont feel comfortable overclocking really im not experienced enough to know what to watch out for and how to fix any problems that may arise

i read through the link i see what you mean so my question would now change to what is the cheapest mobo that i could carry my fractical design essance 600w psu my 8gb ddr3 ram and my asus gtx 1060 over to then that would support a i7 7700k

To support an i7 kaby lake you could just get a b250 board, but to support overclocking you will need z270 which will start at around $100.
Also you will need DDR4 memory. Only very few socket 1151 boards support ddr3 and it is actually the special ddr3l (low power) modules and I use the word "support" very graciously because it does not do a good job.

Also, intel coffe lake (probably looking at Q1-2018) will offer 2 more threads and 4 more cores for around the same price.
For an intel build, I would urge to wait to get more for your money.

That's my advice .

Your current board ,CPU,ram - sell it as a package - someone will buy it.

Hell even stick it in a cheap case with an included PSU & the hard drive & sell it as a fully working system.

Someone will pay $150-200 for that as a fully working desktop with the integrated graphics.

thanks for the responses guys guess i need to have a hard think over going intel or amd and i guess i could drop the ddr3 really gives me headway for the future matt would my psu work on the as rock that you recommended i would really like to keep that

I opted for a used haswell i5 4690k for fifty pounds.
That with a forty pounds H81m-p motherboard ...it's a beast with my 1060 6gb.
And the 1500x is quad core the 1600 is six core.
