So, I'm kind of in a tug-of-war battle with myself and am looking for some help.

My Macbook Pro is over 6 years old, and is finally on its way out the door, so I want to upgrade to a custom built desktop (considering I will get a work laptop when I start)

Now, I know Skylake is in the near future, and Cannonlake is in 2016- so I was trying to navigate a build around ''possibly'' waiting for the cannon; however, I'm a budget killer and IDK if it's possible for me to create a build that won't have to be completely remodeled anyway for when cannonlake drops.

If someone has a suggestion about a workaround for this, please let me know- but I tried to make a less powerful PC for cheaper in anticipation; however, it came out to literally one dollar off.

So without further ado, my original build, versus my (attempting to wait for cannonlake) build.

Build 1:
Case: Enthoo Pro - 100$
CPU: Intel 5820k - 390$
MOBO: Asus Rampage V Extreme - 540$
Memory: G.SKILL Trident X (2x8GB) DDR3 2400 - 120$
Storage(1): Samsung Evo 850 120GB SSD - 68$
Storage(2): Samsung Evo 850 512GB SSD - 178$
GPU: GTX 970 - 310$
PSU: (Friend is giving me his old 1000W Gold Rated for free)

Build 2:
Case: Enthoo Pro - 100$
CPU: 4790k - 330$
MOBO: Maximus VII Hero - 210$
Memory: G.SKILL Trident X (2x8GB) DDR3 2400 - 120$
Storage(1): Samsung Evo 850 120GB SSD - 68$
Storage(2): Samsung Evo 850 512GB SSD - 178$
GPU: Gigabyte 980ti G1 - 690$
PSU: (Friend is giving me his old 1000W Gold Rated for free)

So, clearly the cost here is marginal... But keep in mind my "potential" to want to switch to cannonlake; although I'm not 150% sure I would make the switch anyway depending how happy I am..

THANK YOU SO MUCH TOMS, yall are the the best!

I'g go with build 2 from your two builds. Mainly becuase you wont see much adavantage from the two extra cores on the 5820K unless you're editting, the 4790K will actually perform better becuase of the higher clock speed. Also the 980 Ti would work well.

So yeah, really it's a no brainer, especially if you're going to re-jig everything when cl drops
