Best Gaming CPUs For The Money: January 2012 (Archive)

finally, new comments thread! \o/

with the launch of devil's canyon core i7 4790k, will we see a new top tier or will it be added to the current one? i can see the i7 4790k become a staple in the higher end system builder marathon pcs.

amd's next likely cpu would be kaveri athlons with igpu fused off. those will likely compete in different price ranges.
...
oh.. and, first! :pt1cable:

Why is there i7 4770k in honorable mention and not 4790k? You can already buy it for the same price and performance is the same as fully overclocked 4770k (bad sample but still). Less needed power and easier temperature handling, a real no-brainer.

About the two CPUs that didn't seem to change, the G1840 has Clear Video HD (and a $10 price cut), while the G1830 doesn't seem to.

Did you mean the G3440 (3.3GHz), not G3240 (3.1GHz)? If so, it's the same story as above.

@SuperVeloce, you don't seem to be able to buy the Devil's Canyon chips yet. It's all pre-order.

it's kinda weird that core i7 4930k receives recommendation as the ultimate (high end) gaming cpu yet the whole ivy bridge-e lineup is absent from the hierarchy chart. meanwhile, both devil's canyon series i5 and i7 cpus are present on the chart.
and i voted myself up. i thought this was blocked.

More Kaveri desktop models including A8-7600 will be released in the upcoming months yet there is not a single Kaveri APU featured in this so-called Hierarchy Chart. Meh.

the two currently-available kaveri apus have too high price to be recommended. a10 7850k is $170 while fx6300 and fx8320 both undercut 7850k. apus never make it to recommendations because the prices are always higher than cpus e.g. athlons and cheaper fx cpus.

I'm not talking about recommendation mind you. I'm talking about the hierarchy chart. And APUs is better than what you think and it has its own market but i'm not going to argue with you here. That's not the point anyway.

Looking forward to seeing the G3258 face off against the 750k. Hope you guys do that review right, with a full system OC on the 750k. It will be good to see which titles favor which CPU. It would also be good to see that review fleshing CPU scaling, in order to show the optimum GPU for those CPUs. This was done nicely in the recent AMD Build on a Budget article.

So, what revanchrist is saying is, he wants a Best APUs For The Money article? :) I imagine the whole price range will be a fair bit lower, and the performance per dollar comparison will be very interesting indeed.

Ehm I would love to see how in the CPU intensive games like Crysis 3, Watchdogs, even the single/dual threaded starcraft 2, core i5 2300 (sandybridge 4c/4t 2,8Ghz) is on the same tier with core i7 4790K (Haswell 4c/8t 4,0Ghz)...

Honestly, I believe that the CPU hierarchy chart needs a little remake :p.

ps: Am I the only one that thinks that CPU Hierarchy chart needs a remake/update?

The Intel chart on page one seems to have a mistake.
Core i5-4590S 3.2/3.9 GHz 100 MHz faster than Core i5-4570S
Core i5-4690S 3.0/3.7 GHz 200 MHz faster than Core i5-4590S

From Intel Core i3-4130 at 125 $ to Intel Core i5-4590 at 200 $ --> in the middle
nothing . Please add one or two category .....

Perhaps that's because between those two, there really is nothing worth recommending. You have the FX-8320, but he already explained that omission on the first page, that if the current $140 pricing continues on that, it will get a mention in the article.

I know what you were referring to. The point of a guide for APUs would be because they have carved out their own niche, which is coincidentally the point you were trying to make.

Toss in a 760K as well. It has a better memory controller from what I understand, so if you properly tune a full-system OC, the 760K should pull decidedly ahead of the 750K. That should put the 760K as the recommended option for the sub-$100 crowd ( assuming it beats the Pentium of course. )

Shouldn't higher threaded cpu's (8+) be mentioned because of potential benefit in newer games (thanks consoles?)? They're already being added to the recommended spec of most games.

@silverblue,
@pixdawg,
Care to explain why every other apus is listed in the chart but not Kaveris?

@pixdawg,
apu is not cpu? what a joke. do you even know what u're talking about?
