I'm planning on getting either a GTX 970 or 980 depending on what monitor I get. I have been looking around alot of threads and nothing seems to point me to a specific monitor as opinions vary (IPS vs TN, 1440p vs 1080p, G-sync or no G-sync etc). I'm not really a competitive gamer, I play games to immerse myself.

I have been swaying more toward IPS monitors as picture quality matters to me most and alot of people say that with most good IPS monitors you dont see much or any ghosting and motion blur. With TN monitors however i've heard 144hz and low latency really makes a difference to the experience and even if your eye can't see it you can 'feel it'.

So it's either IPS with great color reproduction or TN for responsiveness.

Oh I also use Photoshop and Illustrator alot. But at the moment I'm more focused on gaming.

Well if price is not an issue (best monitor), and you are more about immersion and less about "twitchy fps shooting";
I would check out the Asus ROG Swift PG27AQ;
27 inch
4K
IPS
G-Sync

If you can afford it, buy a Gsync monitor like the Rog Swift. There are cheaper alternatives/will appear shortly.

If not it all depends on your needs, and what games are you playing. You should search for 1440p. If you don't wanna do hardcore fps games I would get a great IPS panel with 60Hz as that gives the best colors. The swift has a decent custom TN panel.

My main monitor is an AOC q2770pqu and it's great.

I would out of the gate purchase a 980. Reason being is that you have more options down the road for upgrades of any kinds.
I would get a ultrawide monitor. REASON BEING is that you can use the monitor either as a single monitor all together getting a 21:9 ratio (WITH AMAZING COLOR AND SHARPNESS) or you can set the monitor to dual monitor mode were you can use them as dual monitors. And they aren't that expensive compared to getting another monitor down the road since your already going to have 2 in a way.
If your not looking for an ultrawide I would highly suggest the new ASUS ROG Swift. It has an extremely high refresh rate and is named "the best monitor on the market" by many reviewers and computer enthusiasts.
Or you can go for a BenQ monitor they have amazing picture quality depending on the model you get and the reliability is flawless. And out of the box the monitor is a monster!
But if you are looking to go the extra mile a 4K monitor wouldn't be that bad of a decision due to the fact your 970/980 is capable of 4K resolutions and you can OC to get high frame rate it is definitely a good choice since you will also be doing photoshop and such.

Swift is not 4k, more like 2.5k.

I had the pleasure to that benq as well. Great monitor.

the ROG SWIFT PG278Q is 1440p

I was referring to the ROG Swift PG27AQ
Which is a different monitor.

granted the PG27AQ is only 3840 x 2160, not 4096 x 2160
but it still is a UHDTV, and therefore can be (loosely) designated 4K.

Hmm, missed a little letter, my mistake. Except for it is not out yet and I think it's more of a monitor than a TV, lol.

In the end it looks like an IPS monitor is the way to go for you; it's just a matter of finding a game friendly one.
The PG27AQ is not out yet but might be worth waiting for;
The Overlord Tempest X270OC is also a very good 27 inch gaming IPS monitor, but seems a bit hard to get;
It requires some advanced tweaking but the performance is well worth it/
No OSD, only a DVI connection, has to be manually overclocked:

A 24 inch option is the EIZO foris FG2421; uses VA panels (pretty much same qualities as IPS, less colour, more black depth).
120Hz or 240Hz with boost -> super smooth.

Another option is the Asus PB278Q
Simple 27 IPS panel without many bells or whistles. 60Hz
But very good response times for an IPS panel so well suited for gaming.

I don't think 4k would be a suitable option for me as I've read that even a gtx 980 can struggle running games on high. I'd have to throw money at a 2 or 3 way sli rig to get comfortable frames and I'm not really a fan of sli. Not to mention scaling issues.

1440p sound a bit more reasonable and alot more easier to run if getting a 980. I've heard good things about the BenQ GW2765HT. There's also the ASUS PB278Q. Both seem pretty good > $500 options.

Again I'm swaying more toward IPS, however I feel like i'm gonna miss out on 144hz or G-sync.

Another thing to consider is I probably won't get a new monitor till around march so I could wait for IPS Gsync like the Acer XB270HU.

I know how you feel; IPS vs 144Hz/G-Sync tore me up as well.
Colour and black depth vs Smoothness, if only you could have both!
The Overlord Tempest is a 27inch 1440p 120Hz capable IPS monitor; but like i've said has some drawbacks that depending on the user can be either serious or trivial;
It doesn't seem to be readily available currently either, but i'm sure more will be made in the future due to it's success and recent claim to fame.

I decided just to wait till march and see if the new IPS monitors that support GSYNC are any good, like the Acer XB270HU. But i'm definitely getting a GTX 980. Thanks everyone for your answer.

So it has been almost a year since you posted this...I have exactly the same predicament as you did, may I ask which monitor you opted for in the end?
