So I am in the middle of upgrading my rig, just got a new 1tb m.2 drive for expansion, new keyboard and mouse and my new Acer Nitro 27'' 1440p 144Hz monitor. I actually ordered an RTX 2080 but it was defective and had to return it immediately. I am upgrading from a GTX 690 and looking for 1440p 144Hz gaming. I know I most definitely won't be able to achieve that sort of max fps in most games at ultra or all high settings in most games, but I'd like smooth/fluid gameplay if possible with high frames for once, been awhile. So in saying all that what GPU should I invest in.

1) RTX 2070 Super - Is this card powerful enough for a really smooth 1440p gaming experience, this is the least GPU I would want to go for now, I won't be upgrading to 4K anytime soon so I'd want it to last me a couple of years, maybe 2-3 for 1440p.

2) RTX 2080 Super - This is the card I think makes the most sense, more expensive then the 2070S, but gives a bit more future-proofing, if that's even a thing, and definitely a lot less expensive then the 2080 ti. But do I spend the extra couple hundred for this one over 2070S?

3) RTX 2080 Ti - Just go all the way in terms of future-proofing for the next 3-5 years, definitely at 1440p. I could do some kind of financial plan and pay it off the easier way. I also do video editing/rendering and stuff like that as well.

Current comp specs:
i7-5820K @4.4GHz
16GB DDR4 2400
Corsair AX850 Platinum Certified
EVGA X99-A

Its up to you.

The next round of Nvidia cards is just around the corner, probably Q3. You have 4 options

1.) Do nothing
2.) Commit to the long term now with RTX 2000 series which will be fine for 1440, 144, knowing it will be last gen in a couple months
3.) Hold off until RTX 3000 and get the latest tech
4.) Buy a placeholder card, like a used 1070, or whatever yo can find and the upgrade when RTX 3000 comes out.

Theres no right or wrong answer, up to you on how to play

For the price, RTX 2070 S as you can get the founders edition for $499.
In terms of price/performance I know the 2070S is a really good deal right now, but would the 2080S/Ti make more sense for more longevity for the future? I mean I guess I can sell it and my old 690 towards a 3070 or skip next gen and get a 4000 if need be?

It makes more sense to wait for the 3000 series since the 2000 series and the super has been out for a while. But if you really want to, you could get a used GPU from the 1000 series (maybe a 1070ti or something) and sell it with only a 100 usd loss. That way you get more than okay performance in the meanwhile.
