I think you meant you can overclock the 280 to 280x levels..... did he also tell you that the 280x can be overclocked too ? :)

The 280x is well below your price range and it substantially outperforms (15%) the 960. The 280x is the only AMD card that has an edge over the equivalent 9xx card. And as great as the 970 is in SLI, the 960 is disappointing.... it's the 1st x60 card in ages that when SLI'd doesn't outperform the x80.

Links for the MSI 960-4GB and 280x-3GB ($325) are in my previous post.... the 2GB version of the 960 is cheaper at $290...
Considering that's a 1080p monitor, I'd recommend a GTX 970. If it was 1440p or higher, the recommendation might be for an AMD card, but at 1080 or less the 970 is probably the better choice.

I like the Gigabyte G1 gaming. I haven't personally seen any benchmarks of other cards in it's class that have better performance. There are many games benchmarked at the following link so don't think it's just one title it wins out on.

MSI / Gigabyte 970 for all resolutions up to 1440p. They trade wins in all the reviews but Gigabyte winds slightly more than it loses. Overall with the fan cut off feature, independent fan control and smaller size, I give the edge to MSI. Giga 12.28" length causes fit issues in some chassis.

One other thing to consider. Check out the number of negative (1 egg) reviews:

Are you guys down under eligible for the $60 Witcher 3 Game Coupon ? Up here the $340 price essentially costs ya just $280 if you buying the game anyway for from selling it if not...however $275 up here isn't $250 down, there....more like $500.

$340 here is $520 / $480 down there

All the 970's are $130+ outta his price range..... and that's a great article but it doesn't include the Gigabyte
