Best GPU for the money

Gtx 1060's are much cheaper than the 1070's, is the 1070, and or 1070ti worth the price difference? Also, what would you say would be the better graphics card, EVGA GTX 970 ftw, or a EVGA GTX 1060 SC?

Asrock P67 Extreme4 Gen3 mobo
intel i7-2600K CPU
2x4Gb G.skill sniper RAM
1000w Silent Pro Gold PSU

1070 is more for 1440p, although it won't max out the resolution.


I would go with the 1060 over the 970. If the 1070 is $100- $150 over the 1060, then I would go for it. If 1070ti is 150 to 200 over 1060, then go for it.

GTX 1060 6GB would be better than the GTX 970 because it has more vram; also the GTX 970 was notorious for having only 3.5GB vram (at the normal speed) and the other .5GB was much slower and would be seen in some gaming scenarios where more than 3.5GB was being used. GTX 970 now is good if you're on a tight budget and find a good deal on a used card.

With the GTX 1070 in mind it depends on monitor resolution. GTX 1060 is good for 1080p, and GTX 1070 is better for 1440p. But of course we've been saying that for 2 years now. Next-gen Nvidia GPUs will be releasing sometime this year and the GTX 1070 will likely be on par with the new GTX xx60 series and be the new 1080p 60fps recommendation over the GTX 1060 for the next 2 years to come as games begin to utilize graphics more and more.

But the next-gen xx60 will release later than the GTX xx80 and GTX xx70 cards from Nvidia so you would have to wait longer to get that; or you could get the GTX 1070 now and not have to worry about waiting and still be good for the next 2 years playing the latest games at 60fps on high-ultra settings.

Of course different games play differently, but the rule of thumb for the past 2 years has been GTX 1060 6GB for 1080p 60fps. I'd expect that to change over the next 1-2 years.

Honestly, my GTX 970 worked wonders for me, so I could only imagine being completely satisfied with the 1060, besides, I'm still playing games that came out in 2010, 2011. This is my first build so I'm using it to enjoy some of my favorite games to the fullest extent. The 1070's just seem like a pretty decent price difference, and I'll probably end up upgrading in another year and a half or two. I think the 1060 seems like a good fit. Currently looking at this one, https://www.frys.com/product/9425731?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG seems like a pretty good deal, I'll just have to do a little bit of research first.

If you already have a GTX 970 then there would be no point in getting a GTX 1060. That's not real upgrade. An OC'd GTX 970 can hang pretty well with a GTX 1060 6GB. There is very little difference in performance.

And if I were getting a GTX 1060 6GB, I'd rather have the EVGA SC for $299. It has a beefy cooler that cools better than some dual-fan models. https://pcpartpicker.com/products/video-card/#c=373&sort=price&page=1

The 970 is presumably dead until I get a new GPU and can diagnose the old one.
