Best gpu for this system

Hey, I have a system that u would like to pit a graphics card into, although knowing myself I would go all out on a gpu, but unfortunately with this system I can't, with the system information below, what is the best graphics card I can get while avoiding all possibility of a bottleneck.


AMD athlon ii x2 255 3.4ghz dual core ( what will cause a bottleneck)
2gb ram (willing to buy more it's no problem so think that I have 4gb when you decide which one).
460w power supply (just mention if I should upgrade this for the gpu you suggest).

well yeah. actually i was gonna buy the HD6850 also. i already have the money for it but since i dont play much games anymore, i'll just save the money and spend it on my next upgrade (CPU & Mobo).

the HD 6850 is better than the HD 6790. the 6850 has 960 shader cores VS the 800 shader cores of the 6790. i would go for the 6850 if the difference is not that big. the 6790 is also a good card if you're really on a budget. performs exactly the same like the 6850 in some games. even at 1680x1050. ignore 1024x768 reso, you'll be fine in your resolution with these cards.

You probably should upgrade to 4GB of RAM, especially if you are using Windows Vista/7. It's hard to say what will bottleneck you without knowing your screen resolution. Higher resolutions are less susceptible to CPU bottlenecks as the GPU has to work harder when it has more pixels to render. More information about your power supply would also be nice. What brand is it? How many amps are on the +12v rail? You can find that information on the sticker attached to the side of the PSU.

I would say something like a Radeon HD 5770/6770 would be a fairly good fit for your system. It performs well at most resolutions, though for some games you will have to run on reduced details if you have a higher resolution like 1080p. If you have a higher resolution display, or you want more graphical horsepower for future games, something like a GTX 460 or Radeon HD 6850 would work okay on your CPU on most games, though you will get bottlenecked on some of the more CPU heavy titles that very heavily favour the quad cores (Battlefield Bad Company 2, Battlefield 3, Grand Theft Auto IV)

I don't know much about my psu but I got it with the case, I'll tell you some more info when I get a chance later on, with the 5770 or 6770 what frames would I get in a game like bfbc2 at max settings, I'm not aiming for Mac settings though, my monitor is 1650x1050. But it's likley I will be using a different monitor at 1600x900 I will upgrade to 4gb. I don't mind playing med settings though, I will probably not be playing bfbc2 much, more games like battlefield play for free, if it helps I've seen this game maxed out 1920x1080 on a gtx 460 with i5 2500k 4th ram at 100fps.

You'll want to get a new power supply either way. PSUs that are shipped with cases are invariably low quality, I doubt it can actually deliver 460 Watts. I wouldn't trust it even with a 5770. BFBC2 simply isn't going to run all that well on high settings with your CPU. That game really heavily favours the quad cores, you will probably get about 30FPS at best with either the 5770 or the 6850, or 460. For other games that are not that heavily CPU bound, the 6850 will perform the best, and should be able to deliver maximum settings at 60FPS for most titles at 1680x1050. The 5770 will also perform decently at your resolution, but there will be more games that you would have to run at reduced details, and it would struggle a bit on some of the really demanding titles.

you can play bfbc2 fine. even at max settings without HBAO. and the HD6770 or HD6790 is your best choice for your computer. and remember you can always set your resolution a lil lower for additional boost.

Ok, thanks for the reply, what psu do you suggest? And maybe I should get the 6850? Also is there an nvidia equivalent, or a card the cost the same that is better that will still avoid bottlenecking? The 6850 is AU$170 or would a 550ti do better at 10$ cheaper?

the HD 6790 is in the same price range as the 550 Ti. maybe cheaper. depends on what brand.

Ok that's a bit contrary to what I have been reading, but seeing your system specs it seem you know how to build a budget pc lol, what do you suggest? Besides I'm only planning on playing games at like, 1024x768. The sapphire 6790 costs AU$145 and also seems like it would avoid bottlenecking even more just reading the name, but it seems it has higher specs then the 6850????? Well more bit atleast. This seems like a good choice. Do you suggest any particular psu?

go for the Gigabyte HD6850. they will run cooler because of the Windforce2x fan and you can overvolt/overclock it as well. plus the FSP Hexa 500.
