As I said above, I strongly recommend starting out with a more powerful single graphics card. I wouldn't recommend that GPU as you'll be paying more than you would for 760s in SLI, while getting around the same performance.

And do not get a reference R9 290(X) card, it will run really hot and loud.
I have a stock MSI 780Ti (Overclocked by 10%) with a Qnix 1440p evo II monitor and I run the monitor at 120hz. I can say that with any normal 60Hz monitor the 780Ti destroys games and can be maxed out without pretty much ever dropping below 60FPS. At 120Hz some games like BF4 needs to be tweaked to keep the game mostly around 120Hz, but it still looks great. Settings such as Antialiasing can be reduced or even disable as they look better off than 1080p on. That is a huge speed saving there.
If you want everything maxed out 290 or 290x crossfire or 780 or 780ti SLI will do the trick, but a 780ti Superclocked with custom cooling will do a very good job and you will have to get a 120hz 1440p monitor to have any difference, as 60hz (60FPS) is just peanuts for the 780ti in 1440p.

Best framerates would definitely be the r9 290X Crossfire, but you could do just fine with a single r9 290X or a single 780 (Ti) .
I would recommend starting out with a single card, the 780 Ti is the most powerful card, but it is only about 8% more powerful than an r9 290X for example, and is quite a bit more expensive.

I wouldn't go with that card as it gives you the worst of both worlds as it is based on a much weaker single card but you get all the issues associated with SLI, so I would go with the single cards already mentioned and besides, they will give you better performance as well

The 780 Ti performs about 10% better, but is quite a bit more expensive, so it's your call. If you're getting an r9 290X get a Tri-X or a Vapor-X card.

Oh, and no need to change your PSU for any SLI/Crossifre configuration (As long as it's not more than two cards) it is excellent and will provide enough power for any two cards.

Hi jmracerboy

For 1440p @ 60Hz any card better than a 770 is sufficient (A 770 Also would work most of the time). You can pick a 290 or a 780 and you will get very good frames at full settings.

For 1440p @ 120Hz a superclocked 780Ti does the trick. 2 x 780 SLI will give you higher frame rates but a strong single GPU card is always preferable as you dont have to worry whether SLI is configured correctly and works properly for that particular game.
