It's because US tax rates vary by state. Some states have zero sales tax, some have up to maybe 10%. And you can also get local taxes, by county or even city. Since everyone shops at the same place for internet shipping, it's best to not list tax — the people buying something will know their local tax rate, which won't be the same for most people.

I remember and sometimes you'll have state taxes, county taxes and city taxes, perhaps even with different base metrics, exclusions, inclusions, provisions etc.....

It's not that different in Europe, but generally the onus in figuring it all out before you purchase is on the people running the shop, who may not do wrong without getting hit by anti-competitive penalties.

And then cosmetic pricing gets to work and it generally works to the detriment of the consumer, who has to fill the gap to the next "nice looking" price: $599 in the US becomes €699 in Germany and €749 in France or Spain, because they have a slightly higher IVA/VAT/sales tax.

All US sites will show tax once you put in your address. But again, that's up to the particular user. What price should a retail outlet show? Putting a range based on potential sales tax would just be annoying and confusion. We all know that the listed prices don't include sales tax, and since everything has the same sales tax level, the base price comparisons are still fine.
