Hello Guys! I have recently bought a HP Microserver N40L and I am now in the process of choosing which graphics card to buy.

I was thinking about the ATI 5450 mainly because it has no fan, which makes it look more suitable for use in a small server. Also, looking at this page (http://n40l.wikia.com/wiki/Graphics_Cards) it looks like the GeForce 210 might have some problems with Windows Server.

The Microserver will mainly be used for video streaming. This said, which video card would you recommend? And do you recommend getting the 1GB or the 2GB model?

Solution
You could get away with a 128MB video card for a server.
Any passively cooled card, the lower power consumption (and thus heat TDP) the better.
Maybe one with two brackets, for low profile use?

The HD6450 and GT610 are better options and should run cooler (die shrink I believe), and thus use less power.

EDIT: Actually the HD5450 only uses 19 watts vs 31 for the HD6450.

The 610 has a fan though, wouldn't this make the 5450 a better choice in this case? Also, why do you say that it would be a better option? Probably silly questions, but I am still a noob :)

They both are low profile though, because that is the only kind of card that the N40L accepts.

Just a quick update just in case somebody else needs the same type of advice in the future: I ended up buying a Sapphire Radeon HD5450 and it works great on the Microserver. Mine came with low profile brackets so I managed to make it fit perfectly. Very good graphics card for the N40L and very cheap too!

Hi D3V4
I too have a sapphire hd5450 with the hp n40l running Windows Homer Server 2011 and have an issue with the sound card. The message from windows is "Not plugged in". I was wondering if a new driver might help so would you be bale to tell me which driver you use? Did you download it from AMD? The reason I ask is that Sapphire do not list WHS as an approved OS, but I know from trawling forums that lots of people use htis card in the HP Proliants.
Best wishes
Antony

Hi Anthony, I am sorry I cannot help you here because I run Linux on the Microserver 🙁

I have found this thread on the site though, let me know if it helped: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/393801-33-graphics-card-sound-radeon-5450-dc5800
