Hey guys,

I am just looking for a bit of advise on the best HDDs for a home RAID 6 file server.

I previously had a RAID 5 set-up with a Rocketraid 2680SGL and 6x Samsung EcoGreen F4 2tb HDDS and although it worked for a while I kept running into issues and the setup nearly always had to rebuild itself. After speaking with a few people I came the conclusion that green drives are not ideal for a RAID configuration and ill only keep running into issues and have to replace drives.

I have been thinking about purchasing a bunch of the WD Red drives and running them in RAID 6 array but a work collogue advised that they are only ideal for a NAS environment.

I would just like some input and hear other peoples opinions. I believed as a NAS is pretty much a mini file server which almost always runs in a RAID array I thought it would be ideal for what I want.

What do you guys think?

You will have a better luck with Deskstar HDD from Hitachi, unless you want enterprise HDD, which is way too expensive... But they do not have TLER, ECR...

One way to ensure your RAID volume in top condition, run volume check now and then, once you have a decent HDD installed
