What are the best headphones (mainly for sound quality although good quality earphones also in consideration) under or around $100?

I will use them mainly for gaming and listening to music
I play mainly League of Legends and PUBG (and also games like CSGO, ESO, etc.).
I also listen to mainly modern electronic and a bit of hip hop & rap.

I’ve been looking around and it seems that Sennheiser HD558s and Audio-Technica ATH-AD700Xs are good.
I also plan to get a cheap sound card and with these, a sound card like the ASUS Xonar DG.
As for the microphone, not sure.

So, any recommendations for headphones under $100 and a microphone under $50?

As LanternMG said the M40X's would do you nicely. They're not totally flat, but they'll do you nicely if you don't plan to any serious mixing. If you'd like to improve sound and comfort on them, smack a pair of HM5 pleather pads on.

If buying used is an option. The Beyerdynamic DT770's would kill it. Great pair of headphones. The first pair of real headphones I bought myself.

As for the headphones I would recommend getting the Audio Technica ATH-M40X, or the ATH-M50X if you can spend a bit more money. They are amazing, personally i use the ATH-M50X and i have a studio, and they sound very good if you are looking for the true sound of the audio coming out of your PC. If you are looking for something more bassy take a look at Sennheiser HD 201 or Sony MDRXB800 Extra Bass. Both of them are good, but if you ask me, i would totally go for the Audio Technica ones.

As for a microphone, I don't recommend getting anything under 50$. I have tons of microphones. I started just like you, i got a 20$ mic, and god, it was terrible. Then I thought it was just bad luck. I got another mic around 40$, and it was even worse. After that I got Rode NT1A and omg it sounds amazing. I know it's kinda pricy but it sounds really good. You can take a look at Shure SM58, it sounds very good, it's a vocal mic and it's around 100$ depending on where you live. I have two of them and I use them regularly. Or my last recommendation is either M-Audio Nova or Audio Technica AT2020. I don't own a M-Audio Nova, but my friend has it and it sounds pretty good. The audio technica one sounds very nice.

Best of luck,
Steve.

If you'd like some open-backs... The Phillips SHP9500 is a nice pair. Again. I own a pair of them. Great comfort. Good sound, however the treble can be a little harsh. I'd compare them to Sennheiser's HD650's, but with more treble.

As for a mic. The Superlux e205u is a really nice mic for that price. About AT2020 XLR niveau.

All the links from Thomann are in danish. You should be able to chose the language you'd like on the website.
Cheers.

What would be the best closed back headphones for under $100?
Open back headphones would be a bit of a problem for me, now that I think about it.
As for a mic, I’ll just go with a ModMic 5 as desk space is an issue as well.

Bass isn’t too bad of an issue, although I would like it to be good.

Sennheiser HD280s and M40Xs are looking like my best options.

Gaming is another big priority, as games in like CSGO and PUBG I need directional awareness, I would be willing to go for open back headphones if they provide a tactical advantage in these sort of games.

If you'd like to be more aware of your surroundings in such games, open-backs would nail it. They usually have a bigger soundstage and better imaging. I know people using the M40X's for pubg and say they can hear stuff, but compared to let's say a pair of Sennheiser HD650's, then the M40X's can't compete.
The Philips SHP9500 would be great for, IF you can live with an open-back headphone.
