Hi there, I am looking for the best possible Intel cpu for around the £270 mark. I was under the impression that the 1155 socket with a z77 mobo was the best for overclocking (I have no idea why) but I need to get a cpu that will be able to handle a serious amount (3 soon to be 4 monitors, gtx 690 or maybe dual 680's ((undecided also)) I will also need a very good mother board as well (£250)

Thanks, Lawson.

So 250 for a board and 270 for a cpu.

Z77 chipset is Skt 1155 so best cpu would be something like an Intel i7-3770k they are about £255 atm

if your going for haswell (Skt 1150) then an Intel i7-4770k for about £245 would be best choice.

(price from Ebuyer.com)

as for motherboards its comes down to what connectivity you need ???
if it just needs to run a single graphics card then any mid range motherboard will do (Z87 or Z77 depending on the cpu you pick)

i think you mean lga 1155. Ivy bridge overclocks a little better then haswell, haswell is about 8%-10% faster then ivy bridge. Can you overclock an average ivy bridge higher then a haswell? Sure, a little faster anyway. But it won't be 10% faster. I recently saw a benching site that broke down the average overclocks attained on different cooling solutions for different chips, going off memory i think the average overclock on air for a i7 ivybridge is 4.68ghz... and the average overclock for a haswell i7 is 4.59ghz. If you get an average chip, yes you'll overclock the ivybridge higher, but the haswell will be faster.
