The thing is with IPC improvements when you get an old i3 or Core2 to overclock you have to overclock as high as you can it to even be close to a new stock processor in performance.

The best i3 you could overclock was the i3 560 that ran at 3.33Ghz stock. You might get it to 4Ghz with a good ( ~$50 ) aftermarket cooler. It would still be slower than a stock i3 4130 that runs at 3.4Ghz stock. No need for an aftermarket cooler with the new i3 either. That's because the i3 560 is 4 generations old and each generation brings between 10-20% improvement clock for clock.

So at the same speed of say 3Ghz just to make it easy, an i3 4130 would be about 30%-40%...
There have been no overclockable i3 processors since the first generation core i Socket 1156 models from 2009-2010.

The Pentium G 3258 is overclockable but it's not an i3. No Hyperthreading.

With Intel you can overclock the Pentium G 3258 and the Core i5 and i7 models with a K at the end. LGA 1155 = i7 2600K, i5 2500K, i7 3770K, i5 3570K. LGA 1150 = i7 4770K, i7 4790K, i5 4670K and i5 4690K.

If you want to overclock a low cost CPU you will either have to go with an older Intel model or an AMD processor.

Edit: Fixed typo.

Overclocking isn't necessary. For gaming you will not benefit at all by overclocking some CPUs, like the Intel i5, Intel Xeon and Intel i7. I'd even say Intel i3 overclocking won't do much.

Edit: Some misinformation. The Intel i5 3570 is LGA 1155 Ivy Bridge 3rd gen. You probably mean the 4670K
