Best LGA 771 CPU for gaming?

Does anybody know the best LGA 771 CPu that I could buy for gaming? I currently have Xeon X3323 but some people told me that Core 2 Quad would be better.

As far as I am aware no Core 2 processors were ever released for Socket 771, the Core 2 processors were exclusively Socket 775.

So the fastest chip according to this list is the Xeon X5492 but no idea how you would go about buying one as the platform was discontinued 5 or 6 years ago. Ebay maybe.

Core 2 Quads are Socket 775, 771 was for Xenon's. While a 771 CPU can be adapted to run in a 775 motherboard, I've never heard of a 775 CPU working in a 771 motherboard.

You will need to check the CPU compatibility list for your motherboard to see what the best CPU you can run is. If you don't know the motherboard make and model, you can run a program like CPUz and get the information.

You can buy used CPU's on eBay, I bought a couple C2Q Q9550's (Socket 775) from there and they have been running great for over a year now. Even OC'd one of them. Buying a used CPU isn't ideal, but you can get a decent deal...but it's a gamble on how long it will last.

if you have lga 771 motherboard already just get a x5460. People mod their 775 sockets just so they can use these chips because it cuts the price down a lot. You won't even need to mod

I have a Xeon X5460 running in a GA-P35-DS3R @ 4.1 GHz.
It just fits fine and still has decent performance for such an old platform.
I bought that chip actually from China for 40€, including shipping.
Sure it took 3 weeks to ship, but I wasn't in a hurry.
I would actually say it's the fastest model you might find for LGA775 without spending a fortune on unlocked extreme processors (QX9770) or chips overpriced due to high demand (Q9650/9550).

Still, never heard of the other way around. Modding a 775 CPU onto a 771 board.
