Just give it to me straight what's the best i5 for pure gaming? Price doesn't matter but I don't want an i7, Unlocked or locked also doesn't matter.

All i can say is Intel i5 7600, and if you have no future plans of getting a Overclock version, you can get H270 or B250 Motherboards to save money for better components

Well I have a Pentium right now, does it run hot at anything? On the overclocking I'm not sure as of now, But I'm not sure how my mobo will work Pcpartpicker said it may need a BIOS update and i'm not sure about that. MSI Krait gaming-https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130920&cm_re=MSI_krait_gaming-_-13-130-920-_-Product

No build, no budget. Just need a new CPU.
current build-https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pth6m8
Only got the Pentium bc I couldn't afford an i5 or anything else at the time.

Ah, I see.
Solid build.
I presume you've already done the kaby lake BIOS update?
I'd consider a 7700k to be worth a look, but if you for some odd reason don't want an i7, the 7600k is fine.
Also no graphics card?

The higher the number, the better. The i5 7600 is better than the i5 7400, and the i7 7700 is better than either. "K" CPUs do not include coolers and may be overclocked when paired with a "Z" motherboard, but they can be used without one with no problem. You still need to buy a cooler though.

I've got a GPU just don't have it listed. BIOS update I don't know how to do that or if I do will it reset all that I have on my PC? plus my CPU is skylake so wouldn't that mess it up?

A BIOS update is often as easy as downloading a program from the manufacture's website, running it, and waiting for it to finish. It won't reset anything.

Kaby Lake is a newer revision of the same CPU, really. CPUs that didn't exist when your board was released need a code update for your board to work, but will work once the board is updated to recognize them.

Intel i5 7600 Max TDP is 65 watts, no worries about Heat.

You just buying a NEW CPU Gaming - The Intel i5 7600 is perfect (This CPU Comes with stock cooler)

But if you want the 7600K, you may want buy a good quality cooler to cool the 7600K down. (As 7600K does not come with cooler) - i assume if you BUY this CPU - you going overclock or there no point of getting it.

Any 7th-gen i5 would be fine paired with the GTX 960. But you might want to go for the unlocked i5-7600K since you have that nice Z170 motherboard that will allow you to overclock. Even if it's not until years later, you'll be glad you already have the unlocked CPU that will allow you to get a 10% increase in performance.

But like I said, if you can't afford (or don't want to spend) on the unlocked, the i5-7400 is about the same as an i5-6500. Anything at that level or better would serve you well.
