Hi, today I got a motherboard at a car boot sale and it's a Gigabyte GA-945GCM-S2L. What is the best CPU that will work in it? I saw the core2 quad q9550 and 9650 and have also heard of modden 771 xeons. Is there any other options? Also, does the motherboard allow me to overclock? I have some ddr2 800mhz laying around but the mobo says 667mhz, could i get it to work?

Core™2 Quad Q6600 could probably be had for fairly cheap if your motherboard supports it.

I wouldn't waste my time with socket 775 unless that's absolutely all you can afford.
2 and 3 series i3 and i5 CPUs and even whole ex lease systems can be had quite cheap and are much better.

Things like the i5 2400 were so common in business class machines that they can often be found very cheap.

Agree with this

Just making sure your motherboards specification can future proof you for another several years
