My little brother has a motherboard with an FM2 socket, not an FM2+. He currently has a dual-core CPU installed and needs an upgrade ASAP. What would be the best cpu for around $100ish???

Solution
If you compare the passmark scores the 6300 scores better, just because a processor has a higher clock speed does not make it faster.
I also would not recommend upgrading from a dead platform to another dead platform (AM3+)

My recommendation for a 100 dollar processor is an i3 6100
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i3-6100 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor ($110.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $110.99
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

However, that would require a new motherboard and RAM, which is over budget, but leagues ahead of both processors.

Don't bother upgrading to the FM2 platform, it's dead as Gam3r01 said. Your best bet for a good cpu for around $100 would be the AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor which you can find @ http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=FX-6200BOX&c=CJ for a whopping $102.

I'd recommend the AMD FX-6200 over the AMD FX-6300 due to the fact that the 6200 is clocked @ 3.8ghz (w/ 6cores), whereas the 6300 has 6 cores but is only clocked @ 3.5ghz

Hope this helped! If it did make sure to upvote or select it as the solution.
Thanks

You've got me there, the LGA1151 is a better choice.

I'm going to disagree, the single module FM2(+) CPUs are real slugs when compared with dual module chips, and even if it's still going to be a low-end CPU, a lot of gains will come from going with an Athlon x4. This assumes he has a discrete GPU, of course.
