Hey all,

I'm thinking of going with the AMD 64 3000+ 512KB L2 Cache cpu. I'm unsure of which motherboard/ram to choose. I am definately going to go with 1 gig of ram, but do not know which motherboard/ram combo will work best with this CPU.

The system will be used for gaming, flash animation, some photoshop work, and listening to music.

Price isnt really that much of an issue, but would like to keep it to around $600...

Is the 3200+ any good? Worth the extra $25?

Thanks,

MSI k8n neo platium or ASUS k8n-e deluxe

for ram just get a gig(one gig stick or 512mbx2 doesn't matter due to single channel) of ddr400 value ram, Corsair or Kingston both have decent value ram.

Hey there,

Thanks for the quick reply. I have been reading tons of articles on different motherboards the past couple of days, and it seems like some will run faster with 2 512 sticks, and others run better with one stick of 1024...

Any ideas on this?

2 sticks of ram will run faster if it's dual channel, but socket 754 athlon64s do not run in dual channel. They run in single channel. So proformance will not differ with 1gig stick or 2 512mb sticks.
socket 939 althon64s run in dual channel but are far more expensive, and so are the mobos for them. The cheapest s939 athlon64 is the 3500+ at 330$ us dollars.

The A64s have ultra low latency through the on die memory controller. A slight difference in ram latencies is not important. The timings you mentioned should be balanced by about 20mhz speed increase on the chip.
I am running samsung brand ram, on my K8N-E Deluxe. It's fine.

anandtech did something related to this. i think ocz rev 2 does well, and ofcourse ballistix and geil ultra x.
