Best mid-range P&S camera

I've been using a cheapo Olympus mju u300 for the hols that I borrowed off
college.
3.2mpixel, 3x optical zoom.

(I currently have a Fuji 1400 Z, 1.3mpixel, 3x zoom)

I was originally gonna get a Fujifilm A330, (similar specs), as I wasn't
that into photography, apart from a camera I could just slip in pocket and
take photos with.
Then I started getting into it properly. I'm really looking at general
photography with post-image manulpilation, maybe at a later date adding
lenses (doubt it, but the S5500 appears to be able to have lenses added,
which is why its tempting)

Currently looking at the FujiFilm S5500 (10x optical, 4mpixel).
Got around ?220/$500 USD to spend at most.

Also looking at:
Canon Powershot S1 IS (e.g.

Or,

Fuji F700 Digital Camera 6.2MP (lower zoom, 3x, but 6mpixel)....

That 1400 is a nice camera. It was my first that started the obsession.

Did you know if you put it manual mode it will wait for each pic to be
accepted or rejected. You can run it with a completely black LCD and it will
come on with each pic for approval and then blank out again, saving
batteries? Nice feature but not needed in the Pentax 550 & SV I have now.
The batteries are never a concern anymore. I turn it on at the beginning of
the night and turn it off when I go home. Full LCD and never look through
the optical viewfinders. Everything is through the lens now.
