Question Best Monitor for my PC advice please?

Hi, my girlfriend has bought her son (10 years old) a gaming pc

Here are the PC specs:

INTEL i5 12400F - 6 Cores
CORSAIR 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz
WD 1TB SN770 M.2 nVME GEN4
GAMEMAX F15M MESH
NVIDIA RTX3070 8GB
EVGA GOLD 750W
MICROSOFT Windows 10

What monitor would people recommend that she gets to get the most out of this system? I've read that 1440p would be good, but they are only really good from around 27inch, is that correct?
I'm a little worried that a monitor that size might be too big for a 10 year old, also his desk space is only 65cm from the wall to the front of his desk, so maybe 27 inch is too big?

Can you get 1440p, in a 24 inch monitor or would people recommend something else? (we are based int he UK if that makes a difference)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Is there a budget?
25" or a bit less might be a normal viewing distance.
One can adjust the char to what is comfortable.

I might suggest a 4k 27" monitor which a 3070 card can easily handle.
One can always reduce the resolution for whatever reason.
If son plays sims, mmo or strategy games, a 4k resolution will be more immersive.

Viewing distances:

There are a number of online screen sizers you can look at.

Screen size to viewing distance.

If he happens to wear glasses then get a recommendation from his doctor.

Either too close or too far away will likely cause side effects.

Ok thanks, i had a look here:

https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-size/size-to-distance-relationship

and its saying the screen size should be 14inch, that cant be right surely? I have a 24 inch monitor at that viewing distance and its fine

Ok thanks, sorry forgot to mention budget looking at around £250

Would we get a 4k monitor for that price?

Thanks

Agree 14" does not seem right. Appears based on eyes being 2 feet away.

That is too close for me. And we often "moved" our kids and grandkids farther back from the screen (of any size) when they were watching movies, shows, or gaming.

Would lean very much toward @geofelt 's suggestion.

Check a few other sources.

Still, ask your doctor/eye care professional. They see the effects of too much "screen time" everyday.

And they are not in the business of selling you a bigger and bigger screens.... In or out of budget.

It is really best if you can visit a local shop and see the units for yourself.
Past that, you must rely on reviews.
A IPS panel will have a better image than a faster tn panel.
Here is a promising unit, Lenovo L28-u-35 which advertises "eye safe" what ever that means.

Thanks mate, ill get them to go to the shop to see some monitors

But that one you linked is only 60hz, I thought the higher the hz the better?

Unless its different for 4k monitors? Because some of the 1440p ones ive seen are 165hz which i though were better for gaming?

What kinds of games will be played?
If they are fast action shooters, then you would want a display with 120hz or more.
But, it would also need a stronger graphics card than a 3070 to generate 120fps at 4k resolution.
OTOH, if the games are more visual in nature, like mmo or strategy games, 60hz is fine. And... there is no standard way to measure the refresh rate of a monitor.
Take 60/120hz whatever with a grain of salt.

With your budget, you may not be able to find a 4k monitor with greater than 60hz refresh rate.
Your budget would need to be about twice that.

Thanks, he's mainly playing fortnite atm but i guess he'll be playing call of duty one day. Which like you say is a fast action shooter.

So can the 3070 handle 1440p at 165hz?

I think i might have found a good monitor with those specs

I would argue that a high refresh rate 1080p monitor might be the better choice here. One it's cheaper, two can get it easily in 24", three that 3070 will hold up longer, before it needs an upgrade, as games get more vram hungry.

Would the 3070 draw alot more power and not last as long if he's gaming at say 1440p or 4k?

Thanks, so you think the 3070 could handle 1440p?

This is the monitor ive found that seems to have excellent reviews, its a 165 hz monitor:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dell-S2721DGFA-Compatible-DisplayPort-Adjustable/dp/B08NFBKNMY

I wont be paying £330 for it though, often comes on sale for around £250-270

If he plays any first person shooter games then I would give this monitor a look.
