So I want to buy a new monitor for the upcoming game fallout 4 because my current monitor is so bad console games on my led tv look better than games on ultra on my monitor (Tested with Star Wars Battlefront Beta) I'm torn between a 1440p and a 1080p monitor. My GPU and cpu is only a gtx 970 and an i5 4690k so I know I won't be maxing the game out at 1440p 60 fps but the screen is bigger and in a few months time I might get a second 970 to make sure I run games beautifully. I also won't be able to afford the 1440p monitor before fallout 4 is released so that's also a factor. Here are my options. (Or should I just get fallout on my ps4?)

And here is my current monitor if you feel like having a laugh.

You've got a GTX 970 and are considering getting F4 on PS4? 970 is a great card, can provide much better visuals and performance than your PS4 can. I also own a PS4.

Well assuming you own a 1080p TV, why not hook up your PC to that? You could even try using DSR to downsample from 1440p to give the game a little more eye candy than standard 1080p. You could also pick up an xbox one controller and windows wireless adapter and play it from your couch.

If you don't want to do that or you don't have a TV to play on, then you have a couple options. You could get the ASUS, though for that price I would spend the extra $50-60 and get the XG270HU for 144Hz. Or you could get a quality 1080p panel but if you already have a 1080p TV, there wouldn't be much of a point.

I would say save yourself some cash and play Fallout on your TV/current monitor and save up for a solid panel. Your card and CPU will most likely preform very well, I don't believe the pc specs that Bethesda put out for the game. Though, we will see.

Well the thing is, I tried to hook up my PC to my TV but it just looked weird and pixelated and my current monitor is 1080p but it's a very old TN panel and I'm looking for IPS, and that Monitor looks sweet but it's a TN Panel and I heard that PLS panels are the best which is what the ASUS monitor is. I'm not sure if I should get that Acer monitor or not because I'm really worried about colors being washed out compared to an IPS monitor. But the fact it's 144 hz and a 1ms response time is really tempting. I don't know enough about the pros and cons to make that decision tbh

The PB279Q is a great panel, don't get me wrong. But with higher preforming models within $100 of the price, it is hard to recommend.

If the prospect of 144Hz 1440p intrigues you there are IPS options but they are more expensive. The ASUS MG279Q is a 144Hz 1440p AH-IPS panel with Freesync. Unfortunately, the G-Sync version compatible with your card is ~$150 more than the ASUS, brand new.

Newegg does have the MG279Q for $499 right now.

Here's the review from TFTCentral:

If you don't feel comfortable spending that kind of cash, you may want go with the ACER G257HU. 25" 1440p IPS 60Hz

Hope this helps

If I'm not expecting to get 144 fps is it really necessary to get a 144 hz monitor? are there other benefits to more hz than more fps visible?

Here a pretty simple article on the benefits off 144Hz. I can't reach 144 FPS in any modern titles but there is definite and apparent benefit to 120Hz+ monitors. If possible, take a trip out to your local PC parts store and ask if they have any 144Hz panels on display. It is one thing to talk about the benefits, another to see them first hand.

That $270 dollar monitor is looking like my choice. Do you think the ASUS MG279Q is worth the extra 300 dollars because of the refresh rate?

Nope, I wouldn't spend that kind of money unless the panel checked all my boxes. It would have to be G-Sync 144Hz IPS. Otherwise, you might as well go for something cheaper. I prefer to save up for exactly what I want rather than buying piecemeal or looking for something cheaper. But not all people are like this and understandably so.

Yeah the G257HU for $270 on amazon is a really good deal. Don't worry about refresh rates and all that mumbo jumbo. Fallout 4 will look awesome in 1440p, you just might have to tick a couple sliders down. Still, expect pretty excellent performance from your 970. Perhaps look into overclocking the card a bit to extract some extra performance.

and I also notice with my first choice monitor the 27 inch ASUS with 60 hz the color contrast ratio is listed as just a flat 80,000,000:1 but with the 144 hz one it's listed as 100,000,000:1 (1000:1) does that mean the color is of worse quality because it's actually only 1000:1? because my current monitor is 1000:1 flat and it doesn't look good.

All lcd panels have a contrast ratio of around 1000:1. It is a limitation of lcd technology, the pixel can not be completely turned off. Black levels are limited. OLED and Plasma panels have much higher ratios. VA panels have a ratio of about 3000:1.

So I stumbled across the Acer XB270HU, I'm not exactly rich but it seems like a really awesome monitor and I notice it's what you have. Do you find that it's worth 500 dollars more than the other monitor if I just have a single 970?

And have you experienced the backlight bleed which appears to be a huge problem for it?

Nope. More common to IPS panels is IPS glow which creates an orange-ish hue in the corners of the display. It varies from non-existent to pretty prevalent on a case by case basis. That is why I recommended an Acer rather than ASUS. ASUS can be hard to work with for warranty work (10 dead pixels considered normal, want you to ship the panel in). Acer will usually replace the panel, no questions asked. In my experience, backlight bleed is more of an issue on TN panels.
