Thanks for all the help on my newbuild specs (https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/upgrade-to-i9-10850k.3724870/). I plan to build a new system over the next six months giving myself time to research parts and find sales to minimize total cost. I have picked the Intel I9-10850 processor and have purchased the Cooler MasterBox ATX Mid Tower Case ($97.41). Now beginning to look at motherboards and coolers.

I typically use AutoCAD and substantial Music & Movie collections and keep Recording more. I keep working on graphics and often backup large amounts of data. Not much in gaming.

I am reviewing the 2021 Guide: How to Buy a Motherboard and trying to find a good ATX motherboard for the I9 and that will last easily 10 years in or around my $270 budget. I typically have four hard drives and purchased the above case because it has two hot swappable Sata slots. This is very convenient for backups and looking at other hard drives. So I will use 6 Sata ports. Later, I plan to add M.2 main drive. I like the Gigabit network for coping large files to my media server, but if cost is too much, it is not necessary. A couple features I like, but are not mandatory are; USB 3.1 Generation 2 ports, and premium integrated audio. I don't need video ports as I am using my current AMD Radeon Pro WX 7100 video card.

So far, I like the Asus Z590-A Prime Motherboard which seems to be a relatively high end board that has the things I want and I think it will not limit my activities.

The next issue will be cooling the I9-10850 and that may be a trick.

All suggestions and comments welcome.

Hey there,

Have you already purchased the CPU?

If not then consider an AMD build. Better performance and lower heat!! :)

Something like this:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 3.7 GHz 12-Core Processor ($559.99 @ Newegg)
CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 50.5 CFM CPU Cooler ($89.90 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI MPG X570 GAMING PLUS ATX AM4 Motherboard ($159.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory ($119.97 @ Newegg)
Total: $929.85

It would be faster than the I9 with lower heat output, and with more core/threads, will suit your needs into the next few years!

To answer your question on cooling the I9 you should really look at a high end dual cpu cooler (like the Dark Rock above), or strong AIO/water loop. Those CPU's run hot, and if not cooled properly throttle CPU speeds.
