I am building a computer that will mainly be used for Solidworks. Most of Solidworks' performance depends on single thread performance, so I am selecting the best single threaded performing processor and am going to overclock it. (Previously, I was going to use the i7 4790k). I went with i7 over i5 because for rendering, the 8 threads of the i7 will help.
When I saw the Gigabyte z170x gaming g1, I thought that it would be the perfect motherboard for what I need. Now I am thinking it is probably a waste of money.
Mindset and Question 1:
This build is for my robotics team, so part of me wants a big, white-themed computer with fancy lights and possibly custom water cooling in the future that can be easily upgraded and worked on for the next 5 years. (And also impress anyone looking at our robotics team)
(White Phanteks enthoo pro with gigabyte z170x gaming g1, for example)
Is there a motherboard that will be just as good at overclocking and retain most of the features of the gaming g1, but just a little cheaper? I've looked at the gaming gt, but can't find a price for it.

Mindset and Question 2:
I want a smaller and quieter build and I don't care about theming. I won't get a windowed case and I won't be doing any custom water loops. I'm graduating this year, so I'm not sure people in the future will have tech sense and be able to maintain a complex computer. (A case like the fractal design define mini with a noctua dh15 (temps will be a little higher; OC will be a little lower) and a motherboard like Asus z170 P)
Does it make sense to go with a micro-ATX build if I'm going to be overclocking?
Is there a micro-ATX case that I can use a kraken x61 in?
Any opinions / thoughts / comments will be appreciated.
