You might be able to find a GTX 460 with a mail in rebate for that much. I got a MSI Hawk 460 for $130 - $30 MIR= $100 about a month ago from NCIX's US site.

There are a lot of factors. Is the case physically big enough for the card, does the motherboard have an appropriate slot, and does the psu have enough 12v amps? The cpu is irrelevant in terms of compatibility.

I've seen 768mb GTX 460's for 100 bucks without rebates on U.S. sites, but 50 pounds is only 78 bucks and I don't think they are that cheap over there. If you can get a GTX 260 for that price go for it, if not a GTS 450 is probably the best card you can get for that price.

DM186's question about the PSU is a good one as well. Make sure you can actually run these cards before considering them.

The HD4850 should do very well at 1280 x 1024.

The HD4850 uses 25w more than the older version of the 9800GT, over 50w more than the newer model(lacks a power connector.) While the HD4850 would be an upgrade it won't be a substantial one; about 15-20% on average at your resolution. Personally I would aim for a better card if you are going to bother to replace the 9800GT.
