It's that time again! Time to update the BestConfigs! Once again, we are opening the field to user recommendations to get the best consensus for the absolute best of the best in each category. This time, we're going to limit builds to price points, rather than function, as most rigs are geared towards gaming. We're also going to drop the term "BestConfigs" and simply go with "Best PC Builds", since that's way easier to understand.

Your challenge is to create builds in any of the following eight brackets:

  1. Best Gaming Build Under $500
    Best Gaming Build Under $750
    Best Gaming Build Under $1000
    Best Gaming Build Under $1250
    Best Gaming Build Under $1500
    Best Gaming Build Under $1750
    Best Gaming Build Under $2000
Bonus: Best Steam Machine Build Under $600
With these ground rules to follow:

  • ■Do not go over budget.
■Use only Amazon to source parts - we already use Newegg for the SBM, sorry.
■Use list prices only: coupons, rebates, bundles or any other limited-time offers will not be accepted.
■Do not include shipping or tax in your final budget.
■Do not include the Operating System, Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse or Gamepad (Steam Machine).
■Do not put your forum handle in the name of your build, and avoid odd capitalizations & symbols.
Provide linksto the Amazon product pages of each component — we encourage users to use PCPartPicker's System Build for speedy construction. Do not post a link to your build, but rather please be sure to export as BBCode for a quick copy/paste to the forums.
■The Steam Machine must be around the size of current-gen consoles and have Wi-Fi.
Once all of the builds have enough submissions, we’ll close the threads and our Community team will filter the submissions for adherence to the ground rules. Next, our Editorial team will filter the builds for compatibility issues (e.g. PSU won’t fit together with graphics card in case). The remaining rigs will be put up for public vote in the forums, and the top builds in each thread will go on to become our Best PC Builds!

Please be sure to format your list of components as follows:

Build Name
Good luck, and may the best builds win!

Gaming Munchkin 2.0

Taking some lessons learned from the last SBM, here's a mATX gaming LAN box. A 256GB SSD means enough space for the OS and multiple games for fast loading times. 1TB of spindle storage handles everything else. A Fractal Design chassis means you get a quality case that looks good, is quiet, and that you can use for years of travel without folding up.

A decent GPU paired with a large SSD, 1 TB HDD and a not-overclocking 4C/8T CPU makes a killer gamer and decent productivity machine.

Why spend more for any single-screen gamer?

I am very confident that this Skylake i3 will perform as well or better than the lower clocked Haswell i5s in games.

Attention, entrants: the rules have been slightly changed and clarified since first posted. Read the original post to get a full list. For your convenience, below are the major changes:

-Tax and shipping should NOT be included in the final price.
-Do NOT include your username in the build title.
-Please add links for each part to the actual product page on Amazon. By default PCPartPicker makes links to its own pages.

We understand this requires you to re-edit your build lists, especially adding the links, and we appreciate your patience in doing so. Also a reminder, we're enforcing a firm budget maximum. Going over the limit in any way will disqualify the build. We know it's a shame to drop a part when it's only a couple dollars over, but a clear-cut rule makes it fair for everyone.

And as always, thank you for participating.

Rule Addendum
Users may submit multiple builds in a category. However, we ask that you not overdo it ( keep it to 2-3 please ). Also, each build should be decidedly different from your other entries ( e.g. an i5 + GTX 960 is not sufficiently different from an i5 + R9 280 ). However, even if you submit multiple entries, only one of them can win a spot on the final ballot.

Why the name? Don't know, GPUs are parallel...
Unfortunately, due to prices changing, I had to switch out some parts in this build just before the deadline. The Haswell i5-4460 should provide an excellent experience in most games, easily comparable to the slightly higher clocked stock i5-4690K. Both the motherboard and RAM are provided by reliable brands, and the motherboard is a full ATX motherboard with support for 4 DIMMs. The R9 290 is the GPU choice for this system. I'd prefer a 970 or 390, but something had to give with the budget I'm working with here, and I definitely want 16GB of RAM. But even so, the R9 290 is a very capable GPU, generally trading blows with the 970 at stock, and is not lacking in overclocking headroom either. It is an off-brand unit, but its cooler is robust and it has received very good reviews.

It is more power hungry than the 970, but a 550W bronze unit will have no trouble handling it. The estimated wattage at pcpartpicker for this system is 442W, leaving this system with a greater than 100W headroom for as much GPU overclocking as you'd like. Unfortunately, the CPU cannot be overclocked. The power supply in question has received excellent reviews, so reliability and wattage should not be a problem.

The real difference here is the 16GB of RAM. Not relevant for gaming you say? Think again. As of right now, there are two extant games that benefit from this amount. First, there is Batman: Arkham Knight, with 12GB recommended, then there is Star Wars: Battlefront. This game has 16GB as its recommended spec for RAM. If you're "futureproofing", 16GB of RAM is what you want.
