What is the best PCIe graphics card out there right now that draws its power from the motherboard without the "umbilical" power cord(s)?

how does the gt240 compare to the 9800gt ee?

*I just bought a computer and I thought is was coming with a regular 9800gt, but instead it has the ee version. I am not complaining, I got it on special open box for a steal.

Yes, the 9800GT is better that the GT 240 and the best card without a power connector. It does have slightly lower clocks than the regular 9800GT but that can be easily corrected through software such as rivatuner.
There are other cards that have a power connector but don't really use them except under extreme conditions and are better than the 9800GT such as the HD4770 and the HD5750. What cards you can use really depends on the specs of your PSU, not what cables it has(or doesn't have.) The cards usually come with a 4 to 6 pin power adapter if your PSU is lacking the cable.

Then my point still stands, heh. A 4670 will stand up to a 9600GT, therefore, a 5670 which is undoubtedly more powerful than the 4670, by extension, must be the most powerful card that doesn't require a direct PSU power connection.

With the budgt range of performance having exploded in the past couple years, the difference in performance between a 9600gt and a 9800gt keeps gettings smaller and smaller, when compared to what you can get these days.

How "must" it be so? It doesn't make the 9800GT not exist.
