If its just for files, pick something with low power consumption or undervolt / clock it. Speed really isn't going to matter.

8xxx series c2d can be picked up for pennies

Agree with Casey - just for file serving, anything above a casio calculator will do. If you plan on using encryption, game serving, transcode streaming etc, then that is a very different topic.

I ran basic file services on an Amiga with a custom TCP/IP stack about 20 years ago, so maybe! 😀
