Basically i asked a question in GPU forums about running a GTX 980Ti and somebody said to save me money i should upgrade my processor from a i7-950 to an extreme version

I was looking around for one and come accross a i7-990x

Would this do the job along with 12GB corsair veagence ram and a 750watt psu ?

I just want 4K gaming without having to replace my whole rig but if i have to replace my cpu as well as upgrade from 2x GTX 480s im already looking at atleast £525 for a 980Ti and atleast £500 for the proccessor thats knocking a grand already but i can atleast get £100 for 2 480s and im not sure what i would get for an i7 950 cpu.....

What would you guys recommend to get a 4K rig with what i already have. Shall i just risk it and buy a 980Ti see how it runs first then maybe upgrade my processor later? Or is that really such a bad idea? my 950 is Overclocked to 4.0ghz stable

Would it be such a big bottleneck? Would a 990x be a good idea?

Just found a Xeon X5690 which is like £200/£300 cheaper used so wondering if this would be a good idea.

Says something about making sure my board can take a 130w cpu not sure if it can

just looking here i dont see this xeon chip as supported though for some reason?

But i found this one is but will it do the job?

Intel Xeon W3690

thanks

Are you playing MMO'S, because they tend to use more CPU power. But since your your going to need a new board anyway, I would wait for Skylake. If not, I would go with either i5 4690k or i7 4790k. You should be fine for now though.

I dont want to upgrade my board. I want to keep it and upgrade my processor to run a 980Ti with no problems but im struggling to find a processor at a price that isnt so expensive. I dont mind if its used as long as it works. Up to now i see a Xeon W3690 is probably my cheapest option but will it be enough.. I wont be playing MMO's to be honest mainly games like GTA and battlefield etc..

That should work, what speed is your RAM (this chip only supports up to 1333)? I know you don't want to upgrade your board but do you really want to bottleneck your $650 component (I'm American)? What I would do is buy the 980 Ti now, save up some money until your willing to upgrade your board and then get an even better CPU. Your chip right now should work just as well (probably better) since games don't use 6 cores (usually) and not even quad cores are feeling the full benefit, I would stick with the one you have since its faster per core and that will help gaming more than more cores in your situation.

so keep my i7-950 with a 980Ti and not bother upgrading my cpu? I was looking at maybe getting an extreme version or a used xeon from ebay. My socket is 1366 which the xeon uses. My ram is 12GB Corsair veangence running at something close to 2000mhz. (not at pc at the moment) thanks for the help.

I did a comparison and found this out comparing 2 seperate xeon using chips (1366)

W3690 VS 950 http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-W3690-vs-Intel-Core-i7-950

X5690 VS 950 http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-X5690-vs-Intel-Core-i7-950

X5690 VS W3690 http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-X5690-vs-Intel-Xeon-W3690

Turns out the X5690 is probably the best but on gigabytes website it doesn't show it as a supported processor for my board

Any idea why? is the site outdated ? I found the processor cheap on ebay refurbished. Not sure if thats a good idea though lol
