Hello there!

Well basically I have become obsessed with minecraft and I am building a custom PC because my laptop is just about to die on me. I have been comparing a few such as the AMD FX8120 and AMD's APUs but I just don't know which is best. Intel is also another option too. My main purposes are to play minecraft with best settings (Far, Smooth Lighting, Fancy Ect) And get 80+ FPS. I also would like to record with those settings for fraps. I know that you need a good graphics card to do this as well so if you have any suggestions I'd loved to hear them. I also find my self editing more and more HD video for school and plan on getting into 3D video rendering. I have a budget of $300 to get a Motherboard, CPU, and a good graphics card. Please no fighting between AMD fanboys and Intel fanboys.

Solution

Ok, first off it's "you're". Try to be less of a hypocrite. Minecraft is extremely CPU dependent, regardless of what you claim. i5's are not "shit" and you were not getting 3200FPS - you are a terrible troll and nothing more.

Also this thread is very...
proseccor: intel Quad Q6600
graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 4600

this specs are not bad and not expensiv i hafe those and you can play all games not on max but fine and minecraft will run smooth
an i can't fin'd a motherboard for you mine is crap so you don't need mine

Hey
I got FX8120 and it's getting 300-500 fps thats with 560ti sli but the 8120 is pretty cheap and you could get m5a78l-m/usb3 motherboard for it too you would probably want 8gb ram especially if you run your own server and a cheap gfx card Like hd 5450

Minecraft - to my knowledge - is still not multi threaded and is mainly CPU dependent. Therefore you need to invest mostly on a powerful CPU first and foremost since that would affect performance the most.

Something along the line of an i5-2500k or i5-3750k or the like.
A midrange GPU ought to also do the job. Something like the GTX 560ti or wait for 660 or the 7850/7870

Paying $300+ for a GPU is definitely high end.

Also, Minecraft is dual core threaded. I conducted tests on it.

lol @ 670 midrange

You don't need any hardcore hardware for minecraft. Grab yourself whatever dual core or above you can find with a decent mobo - G620, i3 2100, Phenom II 965be (ok thats a quad)

Toss in a 550ti or AMD equivalent GPU and you have enough for minecraft and should be within your budget.

lolz. my m8 plays it perfectly fine on a 3.0 amd dualcore with an 88gt with 2 gigs of ram at 1920/1080 full settings.
you dont need a huge machine by any standards to max out the game. it was designed to work on low end pc's, by the guy who wrote it as he didnt have a big pc when he wrote the game.
so you could get away with a £450 entyry level pc and max it out...getting a minimum of 30fps...

Minimum:
OS: Windows XP/Vista/7
OpenGL: 1.4
Processor: 2.0 MHz (Single Core)
RAM: 1 GB(XP), 1.5 GB(7), 2.0 GB(Vista)
Hard Drive: 80 MB Free
Video: 128MB RAM

Recommended:
OS: Windows XP/Vista/7
OpenGL: 2.0
Processor: 2.5 MHz (Single Core)
RAM: 2 GB(XP), 3 GB(Vista/7)
Hard Drive: 256 MB Free
Video: 128MB RAM

its purley a singlethreaded app that needs a fastish single core cpu... that all. noo need to spend thousands on the newest hardware. infact if you have a £399 media laptop then its likely you will be able to play it just fine also...

Well the thing is I own a dell Inspiron 1545 With Intel Pentium (Duel Core) at 2.1 GHz with 4GB of Ram and I get 4 FPS with Fraps. A year ago I never would have done a simple of a game such as minecraft, so I need something powerful, yet cheap to kind of keep as my mind changes. If I decide to go into more hardcore gaming. Please keep in mind that I also do video editing and 3D rendering from time to time. I would love to record some of my beautiful minecraft creations in Fancy at a good 80 FPS. I am thinking about the AMD A8 Black edition thing and the AMD FX8120.

The A series (llano) are soon to be replaced so its a dead socket. The FX are just cr@p if you go AMD get a Phenom II X4 965BE it costs less than FX and performs better for your uses (especialy if you clock it too 4GHz). As your doing things other than game I would infact reccomend this over the pentiums or i3's as the extra cores will suit you better. i5 would be nice but I guess that fails your low cost requirement.

GIGABYTE GV-N440-1GI GeForce GT 440 (Fermi) 1GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card

Total $296.96

That would walk all over minecraft for you. As a gaming machine though the Graphics card is weak (fine for minecraft) but it fits in under $300.

If you wanted more GPU grunt adding $50 to the budget would get this

PNY VCGGTX550TVXPB GeForce GTX 550 Ti (Fermi) 1GB 192-bit GDDR5

You will likely need a new PSU too

CORSAIR Builder Series CX500 V2 500W

$59.99 though has a mail in rebate to make it $39.99

That CPU can be overclocked a little on its stock cooler but if you want really big OC's you would need to get an aftermarket cooler (around $25)

Hey guys. I'm running a FX-4100 and 8gb of 1600hz of RAM. I get plently of FPS. If you are ONLY playing Minecraft there is no Point on getting a top-of-the-line CPU. I have a Basic AMD CPU and I run the game without lag. Even with a million mods on. The Truth is, if you're only playing Minecraft don't over spend, just to get a top-of-the-range CPU. It really isn't worth it.

chances are you need a gfx card then... i see you dont mention 1 so its likely your running on the onboard...
a 6670 will be more than enough and at less than 70 quid it will do what you want without stressing the psu or breaking the bank.

@HEXiT

$500 I can go a little over. I found a refurb HD for $70 (1TB), spotted a nice case w/ PSU (450 Watt) for $70. Ram for $50 (ebay 8GB), finally a disk drive on newegg for $20.

Please note that my interests tend to change time to time. One month doing nothing but Minecraft. Next doing hardcore gaming. I just need speed for multitasking. Two CPU's I am thinking about is the AMD FX8120 and the A8 3870K at 3.0GHz. I think the A8 would be good because then I wouldn't have to go out and buy a top notch grahpics card since it has one intergrated. If either of these is crap please tell me. Also I tend to think intel is expensive for what it is. It is a good brand and all but you are suggesting for my to get a pentium but that is what I had and I wish to UPGRADE not stay the same 😛

APU would be fine, I don't know a bout 80fps with it but it would easily run it, some of the mods use a lot more rescources though. People were running the minecraft beta at my school on crappy athlon IIs with 2GB RAM and no discrete GPU and gameplay was lag free

I'd still go with the Phenom combo I listed but if hardcore gaming is a requirement try to find another 80 or so to get a better GPU (560ti minimum). The A8 will be worse than the Phenom (and the hybrid xfire graphics are not for harder gaming), the 8120 may be a very small margin better but not enough to justify its cost or the fact you can almost buy an i5 for its price. What PSU comes with the case? Its seriously rare to see a decent PSU bundled with case they are often basicaly doorstop grade.

Well sorry but my system with those 3 components was $400 and the frame rate is 50-60 most of the time so you
can't get that frame rate in your budget. I think this setup will get you going good on minecraft.

I play minecraft (built calculaters in it to!) and played games like bf3 and portal 2. I know what parts are good and you may
think the dual core and 6670 are weak but trust me it will get you somewhere fast beacasue it's just fast!

UH sorry to burst all your collective bubbles.... but AMD's A-10 apu with out the graphics card gets 90 fps on far/fancy/no vsink..... throw in a good high res texture pack and that shaders mod, you should be at 30-ish fps. drop the crossfire with an hd 6670, get a good cpu cooler. OC that and you got a decent gaming rig... (at least for minecraft, but also pulls 20 fps in bf3 mp with low settings, not good, but thats just off a CPU...)

You just revived a 5 month old post.
