Hey so I recently did some researched about the Ryzen line. Im deciding on the 1600 or the 1700. I heard you can overclock both chips to basically 4GHZ or near that to get the same performance, The Ryzen 1600 also has better single core performance? Was wondering if the 1600 matches the 1700 when they are both overclocked the same? Any help would be appreciated , thanks!

For gaming if they were both overclocked the same frequency(mostly they do) they are equal for the most part as they would have the same single threaded performance. Very, very few games use more than 6 cores. If you are wanting the 1600 because its cheaper then it would be a really good choice. If stepping up to the 1700 is no big deal money wise then I would, It could be nice having those extra 2 cores down the road or if you use any other multi-threaded software.

Either one of those will do you proud and I know that you will try to overclock either one you get. Your video card selection will have a greater factor in your gaming experience than the small difference between those two. Heck, that is if you can even afford a video card these looking at how the prices are insane. That is even if you can find them in stock.

I just received my 1600x, to be used for moderate multitasking/gaming.
The reasons I went with it are,
= same clockspeeds as 1800x, almost 300 CDN cheaper.
= A lot of reviewers have seen the "x" variants more likely to achieve higher ram speeds.
= Some reviewers have noted that while almost all Ryzen chips hit 4.0 ish clockspeeds, the X variants often do it at lower voltages.
Which is a goodness thing for a 24/7 OC.s
= The "x" version was only $30 more than a 1600.
= I believe 6 core/12 thread will be the sweet spot fo a couple years at least.
= AM4 will be supported through Zen 3, so a logical upgrade path will be to a 8 core 16 thread chip in 2 1/2 - 3 years.
That will most likely have higher IPC and clockspeeds.

If you stream and/or make videos, O'Cd 1700 would be better value for money.

Your Mileage May Vary. :)

Well money isn't any option really. I can get the 1700 but it would be nice to save $100 and get the 1600 if it provides me with the same performance. Im just mainly going to be gaming but im not sure if the difference will be noticable. I might get the EVGA GTX 1080 FTW2 to go along with the CPU , otherwise I think the RX 580 will suit me for 1080P gaming.

I believe the 1600 also includes a good cooler, which the X variant does not.
Which would make it better money-wise for you.

All of the above chips will perform "more or less" the same in gaming, if at the same clockspeeds.
Pay attention to ram, it matters for Ryzen. Not huge amounts, but it does make a difference in fps.

Sounds like a 1600 would be the winner for you.

Since this is for gaming, if its 1600 and the 1080 or 1700 and the 580 then go for the 1600 and 1080.
