Best socket 939 processor!

Hello all. I am new to the forums, but have been a reader of THG for a couple of years now. I pose this question:

With socket 939 quickly fading out of existance, what are your opinions on the best 939 processor? Factoring in price/performance & overclocking ability, I would believe it to be the 4400.

Thought about the opty 170, but I heard it was hit and miss on what stepping you get. My friend has his 4400 prime stable at 2.6Ghz on air (freezer 64 pro) at stock v-core. I think there is still some life left in the 939 platform, so I want to get the best "bang for my buck".

I would suggest Asus A8N5X. Its a very rock solid board and is also a good overclocker. Its what my friend is using with his opty 175 at 3.1ghz.

UHHH. the one you have. cause buying a 939 mobo is like buying used condoms, sure it'll work, but its like,ewww and used, and old.

I'll be using the Asus A8N5X, since I already own one. It is a good motherboard, with good overclocking abilities. Might be a little hard to find now though.

I just got the Opty 180 (instead of switching platforms/im not really a gamer)and now im wondering if I shouldve gone for the 170 instead and OC it.

So does that mean that I would hit the same wall as the 170 or should I be able to go further because its already at 2.4GHz unOC'd. Now Im thinking I couldve saved myself $80. :?

maybe I can still return it and take the restocking hit. I havent installed it yet.

Well it will all depend on your ram. The opty 180 has a higher multiplier to play with so you dont have to worry as much about your ram being the limiting factor.


On the other hand I really dont think an Opty 180 can peak any higher than a Opty 170.

...yea I figured that much. :? well its ok, i wouldve spent alot more if I wouldve gone with AM2 instead or even the C2D platforms, I dont really mind, as long as I can play once in a while with good framerates.

I was gonna get the corsair xms series. I have 512 now, but I was going for the 2Gigs, and that should put me on par with most price/performance PC's, right?

I've been using this matched pair of Corsair ram for 10 months now with no problems at all. Not the best timings in the world, but very stable and good quality.

Yes, if you get 2 gigs of ram you will notice a HUGE increase in everything you do pretty much. Especially games.

The opteron 165 is the best bang for buck cpu for s939 if you are overclock savvy, expect to get to 2.7 -2.8ghz on air, unless you don't mind cranking the vcore and running a little hot.

I say go for the 170, it has better stepping than the 165 hence better overclocks. My 170 will hit over 3gig and at 2.8 it's at stock voltage.

The 170 also has a better multi; 10x is the lowest comfortable multi for OC-ing because on 9x and lower, you've got to squeeze your mobo and even if you do, not all of them are that good to follow you past HTT300.

Only the dual and quad sockets require ECC.

Would you guys change my CPU to an Opteron?
I looked around and they are hard to find in Canada, and Newegg does not ship to Canada for some reason.

The one i found was opty 165 not sure if that is any good.
