Best Socket A processor out there?

Let me tell you it's like pushing on a bruise, I know they don't even make socket A prcesors anymore but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE dont say I get a new motherboard I know I need one I'm buying comp over summer. this is a hold off
plz respond ASAP plz tell me the best one they make looking at 2.5 GHz large cache (for socket A that is ) I have an AMD athlon 64 2800+

That's the only mobo on NewEgg that supports your processor; you might find other options on other online retailers though.[/strike]

Whoops, totally misread your post. You won't find any Socket A CPUs on "mainstream" retail sites, at least ones worth your notice. Try searching through eBay.

Used 3200+ XP CPUs on Ebay go for as little as $30. Not bad for fastest Barton desktop socket A processor. Still good enough for everyday computing at least.

or a 166FSB 3000+ which can easily be clocked to a 3200+ speed (drop the multi and up the FSB to 200 if your mobo will support it).

Any of the Barton 512K cache processors are a bit better in terms of IPC as these benefit quite a bit from the extra cache.

Make sure you have a decent cooler - these can punch beyond 70 watts under load.

The 3200+ is about on par with a 2.8Ghz P4 for most tasks ... better on some and worse on others.

The 3200+ is not as good as a P4 3.2 ... the scaling is a bit cheeky ... yes for office tasks ... no for most others.

Athlon 64 2800+ is not socket A. It is socket 754. Download cpuz and check Your CPU and socket. It could be Athlon XP 20800+ on socket A.

OP please clarify your request - is it an AthlonXP socket A (462) or Athlon64 (754 / 939) cpu your referring to?

Athlon 64 2800+ should be faster than anything released on the socket A platform.....

Ebay will probably be the best place to get a chip but there often over priced.

Look at what reynod posted. There is a chance you already have the best in your machine. If you have a t-bred 2800, thats the top for the t-breds. If your motherboard doesn't support the Barton core CPUs, your already at the top of what you can do.

If your buying new parts this summer anyways (this is like 4-5 months from now?), you might as well wait it out. Why spend $50 on a new barton core CPU if it won't carry over to the new system? Might as well wait, its only a few months.
