Hello, long time ago I asked about the processor, but in the end I wait the offer from new technologies. The case is that I would like your opinion about which update suits me more, my pc is only for games at 1080p. I know about the new amd cpus but I don't search one in this moment.

My actual pc: i3 4150, 8 Gb RAM 4+4 1600 DDR3, h81m-ds2 motherboard, GTX 960 2Gb

OPTION 1 i5 4460, 12 Gb RAM 4+8 1600 DDR3, h81m-ds2 motherboard

OPTION 2 i5 7400, 8 Gb RAM 8+0 2133 DDR4, H110M-E motherboard

I will put a GTX 1060 6Gb / 1070 / or similar, for this reason I prefer the most cheap and buy a better gpu, in this case the i5 4460,but if the 7400 is much better, I don't care.

Other question for no spend more money, I can put the 12 Gb? Or work better 8 in dual channel?

Thanks you

If you go for the GTX 1060 GPU, then I'd get the i5-7400 (the CPU in your OPTION 2) to avoid any bottlenecks that *may* be experienced on an i5-4460 (the CPU in your OPTION 1). If you really want the old 4000 series, I'd get i5-4590 or i5-4690 (but based on what I have seen, the i5-7400 costs less at less than $200 compared to the old i5-4590/4690 at more than that).

If you go for the GTX 1070, I'd get an i5-7500 (*NOT* the i5-7400 in your OPTION 2) for the same purpose mentioned.

Note that, in your second option (i5-7400 on H110M mb), the motherboard, which supports 6th-gen CPUs out of the box *might* be required a BIOS update to support the i5-7400 or 7500, which are 7th-gen CPUs - UNLESS, the mb that you will buy was manufactured...

So, its either you check with the retailer re: date of manufacturing of the H110 mb *OR* just get an H270 or B250 mb which already supports the 7000 series CPUs.

For RAM, go for dual channel. Get the 2x4GB (or 8GB total) as MINIMUM. But IDEALLY, if budget permits, get the 2x8GB (or 16GB total).
