Hi,

I am currently seeking advice to try and see what i should upgrade to get the most performance out of my PC.

Current setup

i7-4790k @ 4.8ghz
16GB DDR3 16xx MHz RAM
RTX 2060 Overclocked

I am running into frame problems with modern games, playing Modern Warfare its getting up to 90% CPU usage which is causing frame drops/stutters

I am thinking of upgrading to an i5-9600k and overclocking to 5.0ghz. I am assuming getting a new CPU with DDR4 ram would be the best option?

Would anyone recommend a comparable AMD processor for gaming for around the same price point for the i5-9600k?

Solution
I can spend around $400-500 total

You could either go this way (the cooler is optative):

PCPartPicker Part List

Motherboard: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard ($114.99 @ Best Buy)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 Memory ($76.99 @ Newegg)

Or this way:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6 GHz 8-Core...
Im with adam19255, if you are to upgrade, change mobo+RAM+Ryzen 5 3600 or R7 3700X, don't waste your money on a Core i5 which already shown that can hurt performance on the newest titles (specially the 1% and .1% low FPS, which are the ones that indicate the game smothness).

The RTX 2060 is a really good card!

But I will stay away of any current Core i5, we will see if the new gen, later on this year, with 6 cores and 12 threads make it worth it to buy again.

Other cool items too keep in mind (but just for the looks, or the WiFi):

You might want to get some PC3-23400 ram and try that first. It won't be a permanent solution, but between the cost of the upgraded ram and the amount you'll get for your old set, it's only about $20-30 to try it.

Would faster RAM really make a difference when my RAM usage isn’t that high?

just trying to figure out if the upgrade to a newer processor would even give a noticeable different FPS wise.

It wont make a huge diference, it can help a little bit, how much it really depends, maybe a few FPS more in some games.
I believe SamirD pointed out that RAM upgrade because you can try it for really cheap, and without all the hassle that implies changing a Motherboard+CPU+RAM and then ahaving to instal Windows 10 from scratcj, and then all your games again, and the usual browser, and the office, etc.
