Best Upgrade Path - 9900k or 2080Ti

What would give me a better fps boost? I mostly play high res VR

I currently have a 7700k and 1080Ti and I'm looking to swap 1 of them.

What would be better, swapping the 7700k for a 9900k OR swapping the 1080Ti for a 2080Ti?

Cheers

Well swapping the 7700k for a 9900k you would need a new motherboard, ether a Z370 with an up to date bios or a Z390. But from what i can tell from a quick google search is you would benefit from a CPU upgrade more then the GPU upgrade.

I was planning a Z390 ROG HERO XI and a H150i cooler to go with the cpu.

Thanks Faalin

The more I look into my options I can't help wonder if a binned 8086k might be a better option. From what I can work out the 9900k's are running very hot and the old liquid metal tricks don't seem to be worth the trouble.

I'll be looking for the best 24/7 overclock, I'm certainly not interested in the 20 sec benchmark leader board scores. I read that the 9900k has been throttling under the heat so it's kind of got my wondering where best to throw my money?

I can't say that I have been terribly impressed with the 9th gen intel processors. If I were to go for an intel platform I would choose the 8700k paired with a decent z370 board. The 1080ti is still one of the most powerful cards available-do you have a particular need to upgrade it or is it just the hell of it? What resolution/fps are you aiming for?

I try to upgrade 1 bit every year so I'm not building a whole new PC every few years...

I'm ultimately aiming to run a Pimax 5K Plus as smooth as silk. https://pimaxvr.com/products/pimax-5k-plus-vr-headset

They are advertising them as supporting "Brainwarp" (VR SLI) so having 2 1080Ti's EK X seems to be an advantage but I can't seem to find a lot about the technology. Also having to re-do all the tubing again is something I'm not looking forward to.

Faalin already worked out that a CPU upgrade will be of more benefit than a GPU so I spent the whole day watching vids and reading but I just don't know how to crunch the numbers.

I found a binned 8086k @ 5300 from Overclockers UK

Is it as simple as :-

8086k 12 threads at 5300 = 63,600
vs
9900k 16 threads at 5000 = 80,000???

As long as the 9900K stays cool enough it should have a 20% advantage but I don't see a lot of them staying cool enough to not heat throttle without doing some unrealistic cooling solutions. Am I right?

I can quite easily sell both the 1080Ti's and grab 1 2080Ti so nothing is here to stay if the benefits are great enough.
