I currently have an I7-6700k paired with a 980TI. I’m looking to upgrade half of the system but I’m not sure which. I use this system for gaming and would like to smoothly pull 60+ FPS on most titles as well as Prepar3D. Should I upgrade the CPU or Graphics card first. Looking at a 2080 or a I7-9700k + new Mobo. I need the biggest gain for my money.

6700k vs 9700k... https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-9700K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-6700K/4030vs3502

980ti vs 2080... https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-RTX-2080-vs-Nvidia-GTX-980-Ti/4026vs3439

Your biggest gain will be with 2080.

Having said that, if I were you, I would hold on to that purchase unless I am facing some kinda issue with the current setup. That 6700k + 980ti combo is still pretty potent. Or, if i wanted to purchase new, I would go either with the 9900k or 2080ti. Else the jump is not good enough.

Thanks for the answers so far.

Right now this combo even with OC on CPU, GPU, and memory can quite give me enough FPS in Prepar3D on 4K. Not sure if this sim benefits more from a CPU upgrade or GPU.
