Best Value CPU to Pair with an RTX 2070

Hi all.

This week I will be building my first gaming PC but I have a bit of a dilemma with what CPU I should pair with my Graphics Card. In the next 2 years or so, will a Ryzen 5 2600 perform better in games than an Intel chipset (say Core i5 8400), as it has 12 threads instead of 6? I will be playing at 1440p and am hoping to get 120+ FPS playing Fortnite, Overwatch Etc. I am also unsure if overclocking an Intel Core i5 9600K will provide a significant performance increase or will the RTX 2070 be the bottleneck at 1440p? I will be overclocking my CPU and GPU. (I know i5 8400 isn't overclockable)

At the moment, Ryzen appeals to me more because of it's value and great multi core performance.

I was a longtime Intel fanboy, but have since switched to a ryzen 7 2700x and I'm never going back. In terms of value they're just too good to pass up. So I cerntainly recommend AMD. And the thing to note about computers is that there is no such thing as future proofing, so who knows what will come out in two years, But given the timeline of a week, i would say go with the Ryzen 5 2600. And if this is your first PC you may not want to venture too much into OC'ing, as you can mess things up beyond repair. If the budget DOES allow it however, go for the Ryzen 5 2700X

Thanks Ithampton and SR-71 Blackbird. Ryzen 2600 sounds like the go as I can spend the extra money on a beefier CPU Cooler. How much more performance do you get with the 2700X compared to the 2600? (By the way, I will get a friend of mine who has built PC to help me overclock).

Well you're getting more cores and more threads, so if we're talking about whats going to be relevant for longer, the 2700x is going to be relevant longer. Also i like how the cooler that comes with it looks.

For gaming, 10% ish increase, the benefits there really show up in other computing tasks like simulations, coding, and such. See here (https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-7-2700X-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-2600/3958vs3955) for a review between the two, and in terms of cooler, the Prism that comes with the 2700x is not bad at all, i was able to achieve a steady 4.1ghz @1.25~ and only peaked to 70c after a few hours on BFV. I of course switched it for my corsair H150I, but for a stock cooler its really not bad. Also the lights do look pretty, as mentioned earlier.
