I would buy a month of say PIA or NORDVPN. These are a couple of the big guys and tend to also be the most costly. The main thing is they are easy to install and easy to uninstall. After you use one for a bit you can decide which things are more important and if the cheaper ones would meet your needs. Avoid any of the so called "free" ones. They do stuff like force advertising into your data stream or do things like mine bitcoin.
Fully agree with above recommendations - get a month or two, install it on your PC/Laptop, see how it works. If you decide you need whole-house VPN (to be installed on the router), come back in couple of months for advice.
Yeah, Nord, Pia and Express are the biggest vpns right and they all seem pretty good for beginners. Also as far as I know they have trial periods or money back guarantees so you can safely try them out and see what works best for you.
