I have a couple drives i want to check the health of, wondering how best to do this.

WD Black 1tb
Samsung 850 EVO SSD

For the WD i tested through their Lifeguard thing but it gives me error 7, So im thinking i might be doing something wrong?

Thoughts? Drives seem to perform fine but i want more reliable tests to be sure

Always best to run the drive health software from the same manufacturer if possible.

The WD Lifeguard is the correct one to run for your WD drive, and if it is giving you an error you can look up exactly why. If you are looking for another HDD disk diagnostic for a 2nd opinion try either:

-Crystal Disk Info: http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html
-HD Tune: http://www.hdtune.com/

For the Samsung SSD go here and download "Samsung Magician" :http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/html/support/downloads.html

Hi there voreo,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. 🙁

It would be a really good idea to backup the data stored on the drive until you sort this out.
Apart from that, I would advise you to double check the connection(maybe use different cables) and retest the drive with both(short and extended) DLG tests.
Also, it would be nice if you test it with the tools that glamdringfh provided.

Then, you can just provide screenshots of the results.

If you're an official rep
Have them look at case #102115-10415256 instead

I also have no extra cables, and the connections should still be secure

The other tests, although i refuse to download things for trials didnt seem helpful... and really lifeguard doesnt seem to helpful for me with the little information it gives on why it failed.

Cant tests just say. OH MAN, REPLACE ME NOW.

Have you tested the drive with both short and extended DLG tests?

Error 7 means: "Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (SMART) Offline Immediate command failed. This may be due to a media error. It also may be due to a defective connection. Retest after checking the connections. Replace the drive if the error repeats." Check this out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=gjVJ8G

This is why, you can just re seat your drive or even attach it to another port. Also, you can swap the SATA cables.(get the one from your SSD)

In case the issue persists and the drive is under warranty, you can just contact WD's Support and eventually RMA the drive.

Apart from that, users seem to be happy with the third party testing tools in the thread provided. :)

Tried cable swap, the quick test still wouldnt work, even with a different port

Extended when i did it came back with unrepairable bad sectors

I did contact WD through that case number mentioned, so hopefully i can do a Advanced RMA, as that just sounds much less painful. Hope shipping for the return is covered though, as all this was gift and im broke.

Also Windows chkdsk says the disc is healthy, so idk whats goin on

Again, I'm really sorry for that experience. 🙁
As there are some bad sectors on the drive and the test failed, you should have no issues with RMAing the drive.
I believe the guys from the support will provide all the additional information around the RMA process.
