Best way to copy hard drive to external and not have permission issues

Hi, I have a new W10 pc and I want to copy the entire hard drive of my old W7 pc to an external drive so that I may browse and use files. (It does not need to be bootable).

What is the best way to do this using free or Windows included software? I am familiar with take ownership but I was hoping to avoid that problem by preparing in advance. I am also not sure how the take ownership context menu that worked in W7 is compatible with W10.
