Best way to get rid of harddrive?

I found an old dell pc stored away and tried to turn it on to see if I can wipe the harddrive, but the pc won't turn on. It's blinking an orange light.

Is my only solution now to just smash up the harddrive? Also if I can somehow get it to turn on again, would installing a new OS first before smashing it up be a good choice? Since that'll wipe out data - e.g installing ubuntu over previous windows

you can just plug it into an external drive and plug that into another computers usb port and wipe it/format it that way.

Or take a hammer to it.

If you're not going to use it:
Take it apart to extract the fridge magnets.
Destroy the paltters.
Done.

No need to install an OS first and then destroy...just destroy.
