Best way to keep a laptop cool when playing games?

Laptop: Macbook air 2013.
I mostly play Kerbal Space Program on it. I play on a flat table or on the Macbook air Box while in bed. Is there any way to keep the heat down? (im getting really irritated of the fan noise) and I KNOW that macbooks are not meant for gaming, but i got it for free from my school.
